Hypothethical...

Jean wants to go to UAL or DL

Jean is a regional capt with 1000 PIC

Does Jean stay at a regional until it works out with a legacy,

Or

Move on to a Mid Level 757/767 (intl) type operator and be an SIC for X number of years

That's a toughie. Depends on the carrier, and if "jean" has a family or not. A lot of the supplmental companies pay pretty low, even by RJ standards. And have low QOL. They are in the same boat we are in - whipsawing against each other.

Don't be fooled by the hourly rates - look at their guarantee. For most they are in 60's. World is one of the best I hear though, but they get a lot of their business from the government.

If "Jean" is at a place say CHQ, Skywest or ExpressJet, "Jean" might want to stay at a place like that.

Some of these mid-levels are unstable, a lot more so than a regional, especially if "Jean" has good seniority at a regional.

Plus to get onto a major or legacy, "Jean" will get that job by who they know.

That said it is a toughie AND remember these mid-levels of today might be tommorows FEDEX, UPS, or Southwest. They were not the places people REALLY wanted to go ten years ago. Who knows what tommorow will bring.

"Jean" is in a tough spot!

From what I've seen at UPS lately, it's mostly military guys, furloughed legacy guys, and other guys with time in Boeings. You do still get the RJ Capts, too, and I helped one get hired a couple years ago, but I think the heavy time makes you stand out more so than being just another RJ Capt. Also, checkairmen stand out, too.

Anyhow, if it was me, I'd take the heavy job in a heart beat as a better career move. Just waiting around for the legacies to start hiring again and waiting for them to get to my number would take too long. Plus, I think the heavy time will look better to the legacies as well, so long as you got that 1000 PIC turbine out of the way.

I'd get another 300 hrs in the RJ to qualify for SWA and to have a little bit more than the mins, then take the suplemental job.

Ones going to be hiring fairly soon. More recall letters went out and they're going to be out of furloughed pilots who are willing to return.

Rumor has it at least.

I'd do the international carrier thingy personally. International ops has been a lifelong dream of mine, you can keep the SLC-ONT-SLC-LAX-SLC-DFW-SLC-PHX-SLC-yadda yadda yadda crap! :)

I'd go fly the 757/767. The flying is simply as good as it gets and it will distingish you from a gazillion other pilots out there.

Is Jean single? Kids? Looking to make a big move?

If it were me personally, I'd stick it out until something better came along. I can't justify for myself jumping somewhere else to the bottom of another seniority list and giving up QoL issues like days off, time at home and schedule goodies for a resume building issue. Now, if I NEEDED the time, then yeah. If it's something that just looks good or will only marginally give me an edge, I'd keep logging the TPIC.

Besides, I'll go to a legacy if they call first, but #1 is still SWA. :)

Please Continue, all good stuff...Just so we are on the same page...Jean is prounounced like "Jon"...not like like the stuff wrangler makes.

I'm gonna say it depends on Jean's own personal goals.

If Jean were like me? I love being at home (no commuting), love to be outdoors, I am not an airplane nerd, and value QOL over anything else (pay, bigger plane, etc).

Hmmm...I might stay put for awhile. But that is just me. Any maybe Jean's priorities are in line with mine. Or maybe not :)

I'd get to 1,500 turbine PIC and bail ASAP. That'll give you more than the "golden" PIC time and insulate you in case Southwest raises their minimums again.

Not sure if I read this wrong, but SWA is now requiring 1300 TPIC, so "Jean" would be at mins for SWA.

Myself personally, I'd do the heavy international stuff after 1500 TPIC so I have everybody's mins, and heavy Int'l experience in the pocket.

Good luck Jean!!!:)

So, if SWA were Jean's goal, why would heavy int'l time help since they neither fly heavies nor international? :)

Not saying it IS his goal, but if he wants options then that would provide the most it would seem. That way he could go to SWA if he wants, or Fed Ex, or UPS, or a legacy, or blah blah blah.

If I was Jean I would do neither. I would try to move into corporate aviation, with my goal being fortune 100. Jean would have his/her best shot for real stability at Netjets while trying to crack the F100. If F100 works out great, if not Netjets is the best bet now. My 2 cents.

kell i know you used to work for swa and that you would like to fly for them some day, but i have a question. why dont they fly to hawaii? it just seems like that would be a good flight for them. if you could respond to that thanks.
