people complain ticket prices are going up

pilots complain they don't make enough (new ones at least)

airlines don't make enough money and are closing down

what do you do to solve this?

oh and how come fuel is more expensive, tickets are cheaper and pilots get paid more and things work out just fine in europe?

Simply put, the technology presently in use by the airlines cannot support many markets at low fares like it's trying to do now. It's designed for another era long past and a vastly different regulatory operating environment. Give it another ten years at most, and the second low fare "revolution" will have ended for most major markets in the United States.

You lost me. What technology are you talking about?

Airliners. They're basically various reincarnations of a design that's half a century old and that was designed for an environment with a government regulated structure, not the free market we see today on the domestic level. Simply put, they're not designed to bus people at the fares they're being asked to and pull a consistent operating profit on seat sales.

Because of new pilots that think they don't even need to get the CSEL in order to become an airline pilot and get there in less than 250 TT......

It's a much larger issue.

Our dollar is 50% weaker than it was YTD. As such, everything that is traded in our currency is 50% more expensive on the worldwide environment (Oil, grains, etc).

Nevertheless, the European companies are able to have a nice stable environment because their respectable economies are still floating along fine - for now.

England is starting to see the same credit and real estate issues we had about 8 months ago. Now, that's just one country. . .but I'm sure our little issues here will continue to filter through the world markets.

Global confidence in our country's economy and trade (exports) are nearing all time lows.

So. . .in classic American fashion:

Customers want stuff cheap, even if it cost a hell of a lot of money to produce it. It's just the way this country has been brought up. Doesn't make it right, and until enough of us with half a brain realize that we might actually need to start paying more for goods and services, a majority of our fellow countrymen / women will continue to complain about ticket prices.

Wake up I tell them. For a number of reasons, you guys (customers) have been getting excellent deals on all forms of travel. On the broken backs of employees who have taken on the chin for far too long. Now, couple that, with an unfortunate cost for Oil (considering our weak dollar), it's time - now more than ever - to see an increase in the cost of the services being provided. No matter what industry.

Couldn't agree more! However, I'd like to point out - without causing a major political debate here - that it is the democrats who are opening up Pandora's Box with their opposition of the DAL/NWA merger citing a lack of competition which will drive up fares on the already struggling American people.

I'm certainly in no position to debate the Union ins and outs, particularly with regard to the merger. But from an economic point of view - which I do have a bit of knowledge about - I don't think an increase in fares (even a sharp one) is going to hurt anyone. A couple of big mergers, IMHO, could help make that a reality. I'm bothered that politicians grasp on to that fear as the way to garner support for their political grandstanding. Perpetuating that fear is what will continue to hinder our economy.

I'll step off my soap box now...:)
