What is this Airtran \"untimely death\" stuff??

I came across this while doing a general search for Airtran on Google.

What is up with the "untimely death" slogan on the side? Is this something that people tampered with or is there something that I am completely missing?

There is a group of people on the internet that for what ever reason find it necessary to bash Airtran every chance they get. They just basically copied that page from the old Airtran website, and altered the slogan.

That is also a very OLD version of the AirTran web site .... from 1997. The slogan is, of course, altered ... but they no longer have any DC-9s or 737-200s in their fleet. It is all brand-new 717s and 737-700s now. When in doubt, always look at the domain name ... and if it ain't "airtran.com", don't trust it.

Thats what I had figured, thanks.

For those of us who may be too young to remember it...

AirTran used to be known a ValuJet.

On May 11, 1996 Valujet flight 592 went down in the Florida Everglades attempting to return to ATL after the captain reported smoke in the cockpit and cabin.

110 people died in the crash.

The cause apparently was a fire forward cargo compartment where the oxygen generators were also stored.

At the time airliners were not required to have fire detection or suppression equipment.

This disaster obviously killed Valujet, but also prompted the FAA to require fire dectection and supression equipment in the cargo comparments.

In late 1997 Valujet reemerged as AirTran Airways.

There were a lot of unhappy people and a lot of jokes about AirTran. They had a very long way to go to shake the image of Valujet. Needless to say I think they've come very far, and as evidenced by you (youngins?) they aren't who they used to be.

Of course those of us who do remember tend to think about that for a moment before take off.
