What is an OBS departure procedure?

I've started working on my CFII and was recently asked about an OBS departure procedure. I'm hoping someone can shed a little light on this as I have never heard of it.

You have an instrument rating and fly in Colorado and don't know what an obstacle departure procedure is?

The primary purpose of most DPs is traffic flow or shortening reading clearances, like the DENVER THREE SID. An obstacle DP is a DP that has a different primary purpose: keep you from crashing into terrain.

Open your IAP book and take a look at the GYPSUM THREE (OBSTACLE) DP for Eagle airport.

Just to set the record straight, I'm an idiot... I was too caught up in the OBS part, trying to make it stand for something instead of being confident in my knowledge. I assumed (yeah, I know) that the instructor I'm working with was trying to trick me. I guess it worked.

You're not an idiot. I just explained in an e-mail to my dad, in effect, what L/Dmax is. He isn't even trying to trick me..
