I used to hear ATC say “sorry, on the land line. Who was checking in?” A fair amount. I haven’t heard it in a while lately.
Allegedly its back on the 737 fleet. It went the same way as channel 9 on United…
No •The "land line" was the actual telephone in the tower, in other words they were talking on the phone and not monitoring their frequency. Before you get kerfuffled please understand that ground, tower and center used to do this regularly, it might've been something as benign as a student on their first cross country or something as serious as an in flight emergency. I'm certain they all still have land lines, maybe they just don't talk about it anymore.
Have you operated in the NAS in the past 5 years or so?The "land line" was the actual telephone in the tower, in other words they were talking on the phone and not monitoring their frequency. You mean i can do this? United Airlines' Epic Greenland Flight (Newark To Nuuk) Now On SaleAllegedly its back on the 737 fleet.
I wanna use it once when I miss a radio callI still use that excu….er…I still have that happen all the time.
Props to you guys for what you go through just to get the job done. Hope more folks exercise patience, especially with the shortages.I normally just say "Who was the last one, I was off the line". 50% of the time im telling the truth, 50% of the time i was talking to a coworker or just missed it and wasnt paying attention lol.
One of the biggest things Ive seen pilots take away from a tour of the ARTCC, is how little they understood the sheer amount of coordination that is going on in the background that you have no idea about while youre flying. Some of our sectors are bordered by 10-15 other positions, half of which can call and immediately be in my ear and route the Frequency to my overhead speaker. Theres also "Shout Lines" where other facilities are calling for you on a speaker over your sector without the ability to be piped into my headset, so youre listening to that on top of the frequency, on top of my Override line from an in house sector calling which can be random. And all of that talking is on top of all of us in the room talking about whatever were BS'ing about all day lol. Its controlled chaos, worth a visit for any pilot for sure just to check it out.
Hopefully they bring back FAM flights for us someday. Its super beneficial both ways for us to see each other's work environment IMO.

You would love CPDLC!If ARTCC is busy, I won’t do the rat race of everyone constantly stepping all over everyone else and having to repeat it all again, in trying to check in on their new freq. I’ll either wait until there’s actual a quiet moment, or the controller will ask for me when he’s wondering if I’m on freq or not.
Personally, I prefer to talk to no one, which is why helo ops are nice.
You would love CPDLC!
I still can't get over the raised eyebrows I get when I go into the REQUESTS screen to ask for a new altitude.
I wish we had domestic CPDLC. The worst feeling is reaching Minneapolis Center coming from Anchorage and seeing ATC COMM TERMINATED.You would love CPDLC!

Something with your FANS system? I remember seeing something a couple of years ago with our 777s and an issue with KUSA. Don't remember if it's resolved or not.I wish we had domestic CPDLC. The worst feeling is reaching Minneapolis Center coming from Anchorage and seeing ATC COMM TERMINATED.
