What does a shutdown mean for the FAA?

Without getting political, [let's leave that to other posts], does anyone know what parts of the FAA will still be up and running come midnight? I know that ATC will still be functioning, but what about the rest?

- OKC/Washington HQ
- Flight Service (now that it is a contractor)
- FSDOs
- NTSB (I know it isn't FAA)
- Part 23 certifications
- enforcement actions, etc

any FFA employee that is not classifed safety essential will not be at work like admin staff .

It depends on what is classified as essential, and the FAA website isn't saying. Washington HQ and OKC will for the most part be shut down except for the command center. AFSS, who knows? Kind of hard to claim it's a service essential to safety anymore since it's no longer a governmental function and has been contracted out. FSDO services dealing with oversight of maintenance and inspections should stay open, but I would think Part 23 certifications would be out. Enforcement actions would probably go on hold, I would think. NTSB would probably suspend operations unless a major accident were to occur.

So who's going to teach the youngin's how to butcher a pig?? Not to mention, this will be disastrous for County Fairs nation wide! Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)

I heard that FAA safety inspectors are already on a plane over from Afghan in anticipation of this furlough.

I'm supposed to have my CFI ride Wednesday. Hopefully that doesn't get changed!

I'm in exactly the same boat. I was trying to schedule mine for next week, and they said they aren't scheduling any rides until they know what's going to happen.

We had a few students here in OKC come up to our counter and switch their travel days because the FAA told them to hit the road.
