Wet vs Dry Rate Calculation

I've always flown in a club whose hourly charges are wet rates. I was wondering how does one pay for clubs that use dry rates for aircraft. So paying the hourly dry rate is simple, but how do they manage the cost of fuel. If I fill up the tanks with my own credit card, but then only use up half of the fuel, does the next pilot reimburse me for what he's used and so on? or do the clubs or flight schools come out to check who's used how much fuel. I was just wondering how the dry rate charging method works.

I used to rent mine out dry. The policy was "return it with each tank dip stick reading X".

Worked out OK, only had two times where there was a minor variation when someone went to start. At close to $6/gallon, nobody wants to eat the difference if the tanks are slightly off due to ramp error, misreading, or intentional shorting (never had this problem though).

What's a dip stick reading X. I have one, kind of like a straw, with gallon labels, that measures how much fuel is in the tank, is that what you're referring to?

Yes, so for a given airplane you might say the fuel must be returned at 10 gallons on the dip stick, or whatever level would make sense given typical weight and balance scenarios. For some people's usage, a plane that was "full" would be unusable with heavy passengers or bags, so I'd have them keep it at about 1/2 tanks to provide more flexibility for the next pilot.

Also, wrong forum category, mods should probably move this to General.

Moved from Pilot-Controller to G.T.

FYI, if you use the "Report" function we'll get a notification. Otherwise nothing happens unless one of us stumbles across the post/thread.

Is anyone thinking of the rail tanker car episode of "Breaking Bad" two Sundays ago, or is it just me?

That episode was insane.

Just curious, have you ever noticed any variations in engine wear when renting out dry as compared to wet? I'd imagine pilots who rent out dry would be way better at correct leaning procedures.
