We're do you put the X's on a runway closure?

So is there a specific place on the runway it needs to be

My home base has one runway closed for resurfacing, they put one orange X in the dirt before the runway threshold and have generator lighted portable X's sitting on top of the numbers.

On permanently closed runways I've seen, they scrub out the runway numbers and put the X there.

Sounds like the one I just flew into..X's were in the sagebrush before threshold.
