The plane that left was the same one that landed. It diverted back to SFO.

They'll make it up with a $25 Ash Impact surcharge.
Meanwhile the tour operators are already scrubbing sightseeing flights.
This is a shield volcano, as opposed to a cone. Shields can sputter for weeks or months. This ash cloud could linger for months. And now they are saying that historical when the 'cano sputtering now erupts, an associated even bigger volcano will begin to erupt. Where's the doom....
Darn exploding mountain just might put a crimp in our planned travels to Croatia![]()
We were going to do our first "international nonrev" on the 24th going to Paris. Is my vacation definitely cancelled or could it be a wait and see sort of thing?

Head south my friend! We are going to head to somewhere in Central or South America now most likely. My reasoning is that even if we do make it over to Croatia, if there is another eruption we risk getting stuck again. I have a wedding to shoot the next week so I can't go knowing I might not make it back.
Well, the problem is that we were meeting some family over there who aren't going standby, and are lodging is kind of set in stone.....otherwise we would just go to Brazil or Argentina or Costa Rica....oh well, I don't worry about stuff I can't control, we will see what happens![]()
Question though, I know coach will be oversold now for weeks, but is first class still an option to sneak on? Im under the assumption that coach fare doesn't get upgraded to first class unless a higher fare is paid? Is this correct?
Ah gotcha. I would stay flexible and be willing to fly into perhaps Madrid and train north. Theoretically the option of first and business increases your chances, but keep in mind lots of business folks are stuck too so all seats will be likely full.
Good luck and I hope it works out. Where are your family members coming from? What are the chances of them making it too?
I guess I'm just thinking that in a week everything will be calming down, but maybe I'm just naive.
So about how many hours/days does deltanet reflect what the true seat availability is. Because as of now it looks like it may be possible to non-rev.
Typically a week out has been pretty safe for me, even two weeks is a good indicator in my experience. Only time it has ever bit us was because of a cancellation the day prior and we had to ride in steerage instead of one of the 18 business class seats that were open the day beforeBut, we still made it so no worries in the end.
Officials: Test flights show hopeful signs for European flights
London, England (CNN) -- Results of test flights show "there's no impact" in European Union air space from the volcanic ash that has disrupted air travel this week, EU Secretary of State Diego Lopez Garrido said Sunday.

I still like my idea of attaching gigantic fans to hot air balloons and blowing the cloud away![]()
