Bay Area wins piece of new Virgin airline
Eric YoungThe San Francisco Business Times has learned that Virgin USA, a discount airline backed by British entrepreneur Richard Branson, will announce next week that it will base its operational headquarters in the Bay Area and administrative offices in New York City.
A formal statement is expected during the week of June 6, according to three Bay Area officials who have been informed of Virgin's plans. Placing the airline's operational base on the Peninsula could result in as many as 1,500 jobs for local mechanics, pilots, flight crews and others who will run Virgin USA's flights.
The airline must also attract U.S.-based investors. Under U.S. law, Branson, a foreign citizen, cannot own more than 49 percent of a domestic carrier. Branson wants Virgin USA to compete against other U.S.-based low-cost airlines such as Southwest and JetBlue.
