VFR formations

question:
if you have VFR targets in your airspace flying formation that aren't talking to you, do you get traffic alerts?
I've been flying with some friends and am curious if it's better for everyone to switch to standby and leave one airplane squawking altitude; I'm trying to not be a distraction while clowning around

Our rule of thumb, well not so much a rule thumb, because this is what we do: lead aircraft squawks everyone else Is standby. We all have the same departure/arrival code so if lead xpndr fails, #2 is ready to go without a delay.

if you’re on a discrete code that’s the rule. If it’s a non-standard formation the first and last aircraft should be squawking.

If you’re 1200 code you won’t set off TA/CA with other 1200 code aircraft.

Almost is that was by design, if not that buzzer would never stop in places like FRG, PDK, DVT, VNY, etc. Especially when parallel runways are in use - you'd get an alert every time they turn base at each other.

DVT memories:

'you're no.5 for landing' whilst on downwind
