Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

Here's the deal:
Finished oral in 1.3 on wednesday
Unsat 53 flight on friday becuase I thought the GPS was gonna cycle when it didn't... stupid mistake...
Stage check pilot can't fly with me until Sunday...
first launch: 1pm... weathered.. high winds and thunderstorms in vicinity... UND no fly...
next try 6pm... well UND closed cuz of weather?? it's 5:54 and BLUE SKIES out my window and nothing serious even near us.. after all... all I have to to is one GPS approach...
Stage check pilot now can't fly with me until 8pm monday...
I've had my stuff packed up since friday...
thought I was gonna leave thursday...
Now I'm gonna miss 4 bonus points cuz UND decided to close when I hear planes flying outside my window... great weekend...

Re: Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

Well, all I can say is good reason not to go to a big school with silly big school rules....

Re: Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

First of all, sorry that you unsated. What did you forget to do? take it out of obs, initiate the missed, or activate.

Second, you shouldn't rely on bonus points.

Take the flight like a man and chalk it up as a learning experience. Then, go kick the 53 once back in the air. But I have no sympathy for students and bonus points. IMHO, they shouldn't be there in the first place.

So in the end, it is your fault, not UND's, that you didn't finish on time.

Re: Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

I realize it's my fault.. I take full responsibility... I don't think I will need the bonus points... I think I had about a 93 average just on tests... and it as fully my fault on the 53... Just frusterating becuase of the bad luck with schedules and things not going as I planned... more of a pride issue probably... The approaches I've done are the stand alone or the overlay, but I've never held at a fix where it is the initial and final approach fix. (valley City) it was just not something that I as aware of that you'd have to cross the fix twice in the normal mode, as opposed to the others where you can have it in suspend mode and the first time you cross the fix it will cycle... just a little lack of understanding.. but I understand it now and it makes total sense... just annoying that such a small mistake led to all this.. I think that's what I was mad at myself about (again just venting)

hey lucas, are they still working on a solution to the bonus points dilemma that was such a hot topic in the fall? if there's a good solution to the problem, i'd be interested to hear it. sounds like they haven't come up with anything yet. i'm still a fan of throwing the bonus point program out completely, but i'm afraid that a lot of students need the points because the grading scale is so tough that they'd have more students failing ground courses than the profs could handle.

Speaking of bonus points, anybody know how often they update the BP on Crewlink? Mine shows 6 BP when I know I should have received all 10 of 'em. Just wondering cause I could really use them in Trapnell's 323 class.

And while we're talking bonus points, why don't they get rid of them and go back to a 90, 80, 70% scale instead of the 92, 84, 76% scale?

Yeah, that's what sucks about this place.

You know, I am so fed up with UND's bonus point system. They claim it's "for students who work extra hard so we reward them". Well folks, I worked my ass off too but got weathered so many times this summer 221 course - everyone did. Only ONE person in my 221 class got all the bonus points. That was because 221 was the only class he took this summer and he doesn't have a job like most of us.

UND relies on the bonus point program to give reason for the tougher grading scale, or is it the other way around? I got a 91% test average in my 102 ground school grade but ended up with an 83.5% (that's a big fat C worth 5 credits, so it brought my GPA way down) because I failed 3 stage checks and missed one observation flight. Had I received just 1 more bonus point I would've had a B in the class.

The 92/84/76 grading scale is tough as it is. How about making a 90/80/70 scale and just get rid of those damn bonus points that hardly anyone gets?

My other delay for 221 was due to financial aide - unfortunately I don't have rich parents to send me money until I receive the FA money. In fact, if I asked to borrow $300 from my father to start me off with my training while waiting for FA, he'd flat out say no.

That's pretty much, more or less, the case w/ me to and why I hate the bonus point system so much. Most of the time, the school's very slow in processing my loans out, and I don't start flying until two/three weeks from the start of the semester.

Yeah, that's what happened to me. When I have kids I am saving up money so they don't have to pay for college like I did. It is so important for parents to pay for college when they are incapable of paying for it themselves. You can't say they should be out on their own when they literally cannot be out on their own without a college degree these days. My mother used to pay for my school (and still would if she could afford it) but that stopped after my parents divorced 2 years ago.

Sorry about my complaining

Re: Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

I busted my 53 in Valley City b/c the stupid idiot box went inactive on me as I crossed the final approach fix. The key thing to remember on that approach is because it is a required turn in holding, the GNS430 will automatically suspend it in the holding pattern.

When I went to re-do the flight, it took almost a month to do it again because of weather and people's schedules. Dont feel bad. Life goes on.

Re: Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

i'd estimate that most people don't get to shoot a GPS approach with a required turn in holding UNTIL they get to the 53. it's too easy to go to CKN and shoot the T approach there for the required GPS approaches. more people bust at valley city than anywhere else, i'd venture to guess.

Re: Venting (don\'t read unless you are extrememly curious)

did you forget the OBS button on a bendix? I did that today

Kicked everything elses ass on the 103 though, gotta review that with my instructor and then finish it later next week.

This was one of those cases where in trying to get more technologically advanced, it just makes things more complicated. I was coming back into GFK on the VOR/GPS 17R. If I had a bendix, I'd much rather just tune 114.3 into the radio and fly the VOR, but instead the stage pilot wanted me to do the GPS. I think I flew with the bendix at most three times in this whole course, but either way I was expected to know how to set it up and I didn't. Still frustrating though.
