i have been thinking about signing up as a pilot for VATSIM. does anyone have any experience with using it? is it hard to use? any comments?
i searched for other threads like this but didnt find much.

i wanted to get some opinions before i bought a headset and signed up.

thanks

Its a must have for any simmer. They use real procedures, real callsigns, real charts, its great to practice. sometimes it feels like the real thing. Specially when lots of pilots are online.

Vatsim isn't close to being real. It's a fun game, but tell it like it is; it's a game and not the real thing. Sure it's fun, but don't think that the guys that run Vatsim being a bunch of tightwads equates to any kind of realism.

Edit: I should make things a little more clear. I have held a Controller III rating in VATSIM/SATCO/Jason Groom's Computer (before it was hosted on a server all the time, Jason used to throw it up on his computer. I'm probably the 5th entry into the database out of however many thousands of people. I used to be a HARDCORE geek and was a beta tester for Pro Controller). I also have 600 hours of actual flight time and I'm a flight instructor. In looking at my extensive experience with online controlling and comparing it to my experience flying real airplanes, VATSIM is a joke.

it's a good place to start with ATC procedures (it helped me) and reading charts. but just watch out for the people who think they have the knowledge of a B777 Captain, but in reality they have no flight experience

its pretty funny on there.

"andddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd indy center, american 343 heavy is checkin in with you at FL 340"

i played a little cs (counter strike) in my day, but still never heard the nerdy fu*ks that are on vatsim!

Its definitely not the real thing, but I guess its better than nothing. Speaking of charts and such, I wouldn't practice instrument stuff on there. They don't know the correct terminology for #### and it will just make you more confused for the most part. I know someone's gona say, "oooh there are controllers that know their stuff." True, but the majority do not. The best way to practice with MSFS is to just fly on your own offline from what I've found.
