Cockpit Nonsense
"Letters" (Thursday, March 3, 2004 USAToday)

"After reading USA TODAY'S recent article on new standards for aircraft flight recorders, I was surprised to learn that some pilots are against video cameras in the cockpit. They do not like the loss of their privacy. However, after a pilot kills an airplane full of passengers due to "pilot error," he has lost his right to privacy ("FAA proposes new airliner 'black box' rules," News, Friday)"

"Any pilot who does not want to use new technology to make the traveling public safer should be fired."

"Pilots may feel that they are high and mighty, but they make plenty of mistakes and need to be watched."

John Athon
Overland Park, Kan.

Dear Mr. Athon:

Since you think that it's okay for management to put cameras in a pilot's workspace, you'll be fine with them doing that to you?

I'll be sure to tell your employer that so that they can install that camera in your cube tomorrow.

Stop picking your nose and wiping the boogers underneath your desk, by the way. Your employer doesn't like it.

"And all that time during the work day that you spend wasting checking your e-mail and checking your stocks? We know about it. Clean out your desk by the end of the day."

If it wasn't for swear word checklists and fake accents I really don't know if I could handle this job. It's a good thing there are no cameras in the cockpit.

Therein lies the problem. The public thinks that the regulators (government / FAA) will use this video to find those pilots 'that make mistakes' and then, accordingly, 'punish' them for it. "Need to be watched ?!?! "

Ha.

I know if I was up in the front, the mounted camera would become a "convenient" spot to hang my hat. Or maybe Jacket.

Personally I never cared for the camera angle they were proposing. It was my worst side (made me look fatter). I can't imagine why Doug would be against it.

Cameras in cubicles, that will kill fantasy football teams everywhere.

And Jetcareers!!!!!!!!!

If this guy has such a low opinion of pilots maybe he'll like being in a plane without a pilot being flown by some 20 year old video game junkie in a cubicle.

Ooo and maybe we can outsource airport / aircraft security to the Cuban Secret Police? I mean if we're going to turn air travel into a socialist affair let's bring the experts in.

A German shepherd, an AK-47 and randomly pull people out of line and strip search them in full view of the traveling public.

That'll increase safety!

(Actually, shoot, it would if you really think about it, because no one would fly. No one flying means no flights for the terrorists.... weird)

And if you pilots don't agree with me, you should be fired immediately!

Sounds a bit backwards.

"Pilots [blah, blah, blah] need to be watched."

Cockpit video ain't the only way to skin that cat. There are less interpretative, more automation-friendly ways to see if things are staying safe. How the heck would an airline even begin to use the millions of flight hours of video produced each year to their benefit? Maybe random "virtual ridealongs" could be performed ... perhaps by some sort of "Check Airman"? But that's just crazytalk, isn't it?

That reminds me of that article from The Onion right after 911 about the FAA proposing a passenger ban on commercial flights.

Doug,

Either that or a news source for the National Enquirer.

Or a lawyer specializing in aircraft accident lawsuits....

ooops, I guess those two are the same! Three if I throw in your "Dork" label!

Too many pilots do not follow procedures when they think they can get by without it and we all know it. They do not like voice recorders- although they have found many fatal accident causes that make flying safer for everyone. They object to the technology of cameras - too new an idea, even though they are common in society. Aircraft are corperate property, and do not belong to the flight crew. It's not our choice. If you are not a negligent pilot, you have nothing to worry about. Want privacy? Buy your own light airplane and start a charter busines. Should passengers be able to sue a pilot who kicks the rudder pedals so hard that the vertical tears off an Airbus and kills thier wife? Why not? You would sue a bad doctor who killed your wife! And why not use cameras to ferret out and provide evidence of bad pilots, pilots that even other crewmembers wish they had evidence on so they would not have to fly with them anymore. Remember- the guy next to you can kill you just as dead as a terrorist if He is sloppy. It happens all the time. And yes, I am an airline pilot, and no I am not a Lawyer.
