While waiting word on a tentative agreement between US Airways and the Air Line Pilots Association, Fred Freshwater floated this idea.

Put a nice little sign near the cockpit: Will work for tips.

"If the airline doesn't want to pay us, maybe the passengers will," said Freshwater, chairman of the Pittsburgh pilots union council. "Really, when you do the math, it could be very beneficial."

Freshwater, a captain, suggested a $20 tip per passenger for captains. As for the first officers, well, $10 would do.

Holy cow, if we worked for a straight 15% gratiuty, I'd make phat bank! Then I could retire early, sit on my duff and surf the net all day!

A boy can dream!

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

I got a gift basket for a tip just the other day!

I thought that was nice.

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

If every passenger tipped Bill $1, he'd make more than he is now.

$1

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

Sounds nice.. but it'd be another reason for airlines to try and lower pilot salaries

"Hey, they make tips! We don't need to pay them that much!"

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

And the next thing you know, they'll be saying, we'll let you pay minimum wage and just collect tips from the passengers!

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

In Colordo tipped employees are paid 1/2 min wage. Ten years ago I was making $2.13 an hour + tips. Frontier would be saving quite a lot of $$ if they could pull that off. Anyone know of any other States that have 1/2 min wage laws for tipped employees?

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

Rather than give concessions via pay rate cuts, why not just "freeze" the rates for a few years? I never see this mentioned in the media. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

JR

The Kiwi pilots were "passing the hat" at the end of their brief business life.

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

Can we add a sign to the plane, "This airline reserves the right to add gratuity to flights of more than six people."?

Minimum wage and how about letting the passengers chip in for gas...

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

The minimum is $2.38 plus tips in Maryland. Kind of hard to make a living like that, huh?

I can just see it now -- the Wall Street Journal just ran a big article, but of course, their conclusion is be like Southwest and JetBlue.

They never seem to mention that you simply cannot have the transportation system this country needs if everyone goes with the Southwest model. If even Herb says that, why do the jokers on Wall Street with not one second of time running an airline say, well, they all have to be like Southwest?

And they never seem to mention that the 737 pilots at the top of the Southwest wage scale make as much, if not more, than the 737 pilots at the legacy carriers.

Idiots!

I think this was SWA's solution to the early 90s recession. Seems like the biggies want to be like SWA in ALMOST everything. Honestly, if the pilot's froze their pay rates for a couple of years, I'm pretty sure management would find a way to screw that one up, too.

Wanna read something really scary for Halloween? Read about Frank Lorenzo and how he treated the Continental people. Not just pilots, but FAs and mechanics, too. It's all happening almost the exact same way again, except at several airlines at once now.

Who has a couple of years? Many of these companies only have a couple of months left

Not exactly the "exact same way". Lorenzo used the bankruptcy court strictly to abbrogate labor contracts. Continental was not really bankrupt. Lorenzo was able to use the court exactly as he wanted, getting every outcome he sought. After that the bankruptcy laws were tightened to remove that strategy.

The carriers today are bankrupt in every sense of the word. Once they go into Chapter 11 the creditors run the show for the most part.

US Air has more cash on hand now than they did the first time they declared bankruptcy, American was never REALLY bankrupt but used the threat to get pilot concessions, and Delta is trying the same tactic. Lorenzo also pulled the "Southwest is running us out of business" line.

It's almost like going on a dive boat and tipping the divemaster. I can see myself now when I get hired making an accouncement on the PA "ladies and gentlemen, if you want a landing that will be $10 per person, If you want a smooth landing that will be in excess of $20 per person and yes there will be no refunds if the wind shifts and we slam to the ground" "thank you for flying poverty airlines"

Some states have whats called a tip credit. It gets kind of confusing on how its calculated. But I know California isnt a tip credit state.

The question is not what their pay scale is, but what their pilot cost is. I'd imagine SWA is still ahead of the other carriers in that area. But the gap will be getting closed.

Re: USAirways Pilot\'s Idea For Revenue Generation

Limo drivers get tips, cabbies get tips, bus drivers get tips, van drivers get tips. Since we are compared to these groups so often, why shouldn't we get tips too? But wait, we are trained professionals, not glorified bus drivers. So I guess then we should get paid like trained professionals.

Either tip us for being glorified bus drivers, or pay us properly for being trained professionals.
