Urine Protien Level

What are the FAA standards for protein found in urine? No 24 hour test was done just one sample with +3 reading of protein. The doctor says it might be a UTI and prescribed antibiotics. For a first time class I medical applicant can this be something disqualifying?

No, I have a friend who went to get a new first class medical two weeks ago and had just worked out before he went. The doc said he had elevated levels of protein in his urine too. He asked him if he had done anything strenuous that day and he told him he had just worked out. He did the rest of the medical and came back the next day to give another urine sample, passed and got his first class.

As for why your levels were elevated, it could be for a number of reasons, I wouldn't worry about it, It wont affect you getting a medical in the future.

Actually...

You should be concerned about it! This happened to me and I was denied a first class medical. Had to go through a process with the regional medical administrator, in the long run it did turn out that their was something wrong with my kidneys, fortunately because it was caught very early, it was completely treatable. My nephrologist said he had never seen a case where this condition was diagnosed so early, and it was only because of the FAA medical requirement. Most people, he said, only discover it long after their kidneys are near failure. Also, once treatment was determined I had no problem getting my first class medical back.

As the previous poster said, it may simply only because you strained yourself (exercised) immediately before the medical. But my advice to you is get it checked out to save yourself heartache in the long run.

Best Regards,

If there is protein in the urine, it indicates there may be a kidney disease or it could be due to exercise. If it persists on more than one test, it must be evaluated. You can get a 1st Class with kidney disease, it just might require a Special Issuance - depending on the problem.
