"Hello everyone, this is a special IPA Executive Board message for Friday, March 28th.

Today, UPS management has announced their intent to end the pilot furlough by sending out recall notices to the remaining nine crewmembers who have not yet been offered a recall opportunity. The recall date will be May 18th, 2014.

This is tremendous news. May 23rd would mark four full years that these last remaining furloughed members have had their lives literally turned upside down. On behalf of the entire IPA pilot group, we extend to each returning pilot a very warm “welcome home.”

Ultimately, the solidarity and contributions of this pilot group finally allow us to celebrate the recall of all of our brothers and sisters.

Many may forget that UPS management initially stated the intention to furlough up to 500 pilots. With the membership’s overwhelming backing of the IPA Solidarity Policy, this management plan was quickly scaled back to 300 pilots marked for furlough.

While UPS may have expected those initial efforts, they never, for one instant, believed IPA pilots would voluntarily forgo open time and JA for an extended period of time. You proved them wrong. The announced furlough of 300 was stopped dead in its tracks at 109 because of our unified effort and resolve.

We then turned our attention to expediting the return of every furloughed member. It has been a long road. But through it all, we have remained united. Defying every management expectation, the membership overwhelmingly supported the unpredictable application of the IPA Solidarity Policy. Management, again, was literally astounded.

No pilot group has ever shown this level of support for furloughed members. In addition to the IPA Solidarity Policy, the Association’s membership overwhelmingly approved the creation of the Unity Fund to make sure furloughed members in need, and their families, maintained COBRA coverage under UPS health plans.

While we did not seek this test, the IPA membership has passed it with flying colors. We have proven that we are more than a collection of individuals. We are individuals who have banded together with a common purpose to protect each other and advance our profession.

Yes, IPA is a family that includes and protects all of our individual families. As this terrible period in our history ends, let’s remember this: We got through it, unified and together.

Now, other challenges loom large. We will successfully face each of these in exactly the same manner. Our unity and respect for each other will remain key. We will succeed, this much is certain.

For tonight, our focus is on celebrating the end of this difficult chapter. To all of our returning members, again, we extend a heartfelt “welcome back.”

Fraternally,

IPA Executive Board"

I think what happened to UPS last Christmas was a pretty big deal and they want to make sure it doesn't happen again. This is the third (and final) recall this year. I believe we had about 50 guys still out before Christmas.

They couldn't "over staff" by nine crew members these past four years? That really really sucks.

The furloughs happened during the downturn. There were cuts throughout the company to make keep the stockholders happy. The IPA presented a plan that would have allowed pilots to take long term unpaid leaves to prevent the furloughs but it was rejected in favor of putting people on the street.

DE727UPS,

Your furloughs have been out a long time and I'd imagine most sought employment elsewhere during all that.

Do you know if everyone furloughed and recalled has come back…or do you have a provision to bypass recall for some length of time before having to cut bait forever?

The bottom of any seniority list is a precarious place to be.

I hate that business nowadays is all about pleasing the shareholders and not the people who actually keep the company in business, the customers and employees.

I read an article in the WSJ this morning that said that corporate profits are at all time highs and forecasted to go higher this year simply because companies are holding off from hiring people and investing in their products.

Kind of blows holes in the trickle down theory.

There were a few hired at other airlines or have bypassed on MIL leave. I think you can only bypass twice unless your on MIL leave. You'd be coming back to a 150K a year job.
