Wow.... two years of 121 experience required for their "entry level, assistant" position.

Two years is a pretty standard minimum at most major airlines. A few years back some people were getting hired with less time but that seems to no longer be the case.

Minimums to apply for a dispatcher position, sure... and I'd probably imagine most majors are in the 3-5 years experience range. In fact, this listing says 3 years is preferred (along with ETOPS experience). But this is not a dispatcher position, it's an assistant dispatcher, and listed as "entry level". I can only image dispatchers with experience are not applying in order to become an assistant. Also from the job description, "must be able to do what the dispatchers tell you to do with a sense of urgency".

Southwest hires people initially as assistants also, and upgrades them to become regular dispatchers several months later. I don’t work at UPS so I don’t know what the timeline is to becoming a regular dispatcher but I would imagine it’s not a super long wait.

Dispatchers are applying because it is the only way to get the dispatch job at UPS and know the assistant position is a short term job in a long career. Most assistant positions are basically trainee positions that only last until you finish training. At Southwest, the assistant dispatcher is a trainee, dispatch support, and hazing position. I also wouldnt get too worked up about the wording of the job posting. Its created by HR types that dont really understand what the job or profession is.

I jumped at the chance to get with UPS, and I'm so glad I got it. Being an assistant for a little while when looking at 25+ year career possibility doesn't bother me at all... like others said, Southwest has it, Delta has (had?) it... it's usually only for a short while and it probably well ensures when you do get your own desk, you can handle the work.

Everyone else is pretty much dead on. You are missing a very key part of the job listing, which states the position may lead to becoming a UPS dispatcher. If you have any desire to become a dispatcher with ups, and have at least 2 years experience (but probably more), then I would apply.

I guess that makes more sense, interpreting it that way. Thanks for the classifications!

Of course if you get hired - you will need to take the Jimmy Lawson language course.
In this persons defense, his English improved between when I met him and when our paths split.

Yes this is an inside joke and those at UPS or those that know him will fully understand.
