United\'s new pay-cut..trying to understand somethi

Been out of the loop for a little while on the airline news, but was reading on MSN through the archives today and noticed an article about the United pilot pay cut of something around 11%, which would bring Senior 747/777 Captain pay down to some $179.00.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's almost 50% less than what they were making before all this [censored] hit the fan. First with the 32 or so % cut, and now another 11.

Isn't that sort of..Outrageous?
wtf is going on?

The industry is going through a huge financial crisis. UAL is one of the financially weakest. It is questionable that they will even stay in business at those pay rates, but the UAL pilots voted to accept those wages because their prospects on the street are worse. It's been in all the papers.

Ouch...it sucks what the industry is going through right now, but we can only hope for the best. Theres only up from bottom, and i feel the industry has hit pretty much the bottom. For the UAL pilots, it sucks that their wage might of been cut in half, but some income, is better then no income. I feel thats why they accepted the wages.

Nah, it could be a LOT worse. Skywest, Eagle, XJT, CHQ, Mesaba, Pinnacle, Colgan, etc could stop hiring. UAL, US Air and FlyI could all already be under. Delta could file Ch 11. Plenty of bad stuff COULD still happen. All in all, the industry is starting to straighten itself out.

Re: United\'s new pay-cut..trying to understand som

we were talking in class the other day basically saying that the airlines are lossing profit b/c of each other. what needs to happen is one of the airlines to go out of business. i know its a terrible thing to say but it has to happen and the gov't cannot protect the companies from bankruptcy. if the airlines as a whole raised ticket prices together, making a profit would obviously be easier. therefore they wouldn't have to make pay cuts all the time. the airlines are basically killing each other.

I see UAL going down and maybe Independence.

Delta, US, and company have actually really restructured themselves nicely, but we'll have to see. Just feel bad for the pilots/FAs and their families.

Re: United\'s new pay-cut..trying to understand som

I see UAL sticking around longer than US Air. US has already mortgaged the farm and called in as many gov't favors as they can. The gov't has bailed them out like five times already, and the taxpayers are gonna draw the line at some point. UAL's having problems with their mx guys, so I wouldn't be surprised to see that contract get burned in court and the mx outsourced if the A&Ps go on strike. It's gonna be a nasty year for both either way. IMO, i'm surprised FlyI is still FlyING.

It would be a lot easier for ticket prices to go up if all the airlines raised them. Then pax wouldn't just flock to the cheapest one. But in a setup like the airlines, that won't happen. It's kinda like a cartel when they set the price, but someone else is secretly selling the product cheaper to undercut his competitors, except it's all out in the open. Now, if you look at the theme parks in Orlando, ticket prices generally go up every year, and the parks are fighting to see who can match the price without driving people away.......

Re: United\'s new pay-cut..trying to understand som

I thought the pay cut was rejected by a judge for being to low?

Re: United\'s new pay-cut..trying to understand som

Meaning the pay cut wasn't big enough? Yes, that's what I thought happened also.

And "maybe" Independence? Dude, Indy's death sentence was signed the moment they ended their relationship with UA. US Airways is a goner too, but I see UA making the Darwinian cut.

[/ QUOTE ]Nope.. it was because of something else (see story here), in fact.. the original pay cut was for 14% but i recall hearing that the judge thought it was too HIGH considering the previous 30%... i recall someone posting about hearing the judge say that "it can't all come from labor" type statement but i can't seem to find the post.

this paycut is for 11.8%.
