United\'s Channel 9

My trip around the world is coming up (August 11th). As it nears I have been looking into details.

On two of the flights, they are United: JFK-LHR, PEK(Beijing)-ORD

Is anyone familiar with Channel 9 on international flights? Do they operate it? I wasn't sure if it has restrictions because of foreign countries. Thanks!

On the A319/A320, 777, and 747, Channel 9 is always "From the Flight Deck". On the 757/767, from my experience, Channel 9 isn't available. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Too bad, because I love listening to Channel 9. The 737 usually has Channel 9, but on one of my flights there was jazz music in place of it.

So, there are no restrictions because of foreign countries that I know of. I know your Asia flight must be a 777 or 747, so they'll have Channel 9. Unless JFK-LHR is a 767, then you'll have it on that flight as well. Of course, it's the captain's discretion whether he wants to make it available at all on a flight.

Re: United\'s Channel 9

They are both 777 flights. Thank you for the information. I was afraid my FIRST trip "over the pond" would be a long one without it.

Re: United\'s Channel 9

So they actually show the flight deck? United rules!

Re: United\'s Channel 9

Oh yeah, I forgot United doesn't offer direct tv on every seat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Go Jetblue!!

Re: United\'s Channel 9

"From the Flight Deck" is my favorite thing about United, although I have found it to be on other Channels than 9. I know at least once it was on 2. I can't remember the equipment type, but i was pissed because channel 9 was nothing, so i went searching threw the channels and found the flight deck on 2.

I have often pondered why only United has this service.

its not always, I was on a United A-320 and they didnt have it. I asked the flight attendent and she said that its the Capt choice. So, not always, but still really cool when they do have it.

It even says that in the in-flight magazine, but why would the captian not want it on?

Sure! This is such a treat, and I am very forunate to be going on it..

Aug. 11 United Airlines (777) New York to London
Aug. 16 Lufthansa Airlines (A321) London to Frankfurt
Aug. 16 Lufthansa Airlines (747) Frankfurt to Delhi
Aug. 23 Thai Airways (A333) Delhi to Bangkok
Aug. 23 Thai Airways (A333) Bangkok to Beijing
Aug. 29 United Airlines (777) Beijing to Chicago
Aug. 29 United Airlines (A320) Chicago to Boston

The primary reason for this trip is my Step-Father is a member of IDG Publishing Worldwide. They hold a yearly meeting at a different location. Last year Beijing was chosen, but many guests feared SARS /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif and they had to cancel. This year it is in Beijing again and my Step-Father asked if my Mother, Brother and I would like to come along! As a treat he wanted to show us where he comes from(London) along the way. And from there it turned into this Around The World trip!

Please feel free to ask any questions or any requests on pictures! I will be sure to get lots of pictures as these memories are going to be priceless. Does anyone have any advice on England, India or China? Maybe something could help me out!

Cause he doesn't want some ninny hear them talk about something routine and get all bent out of shape.

Say they're told to make a certain intersection in x minutes and the ninny didn't understand that.

"United 1234, can you make it?

No, we can't."

And so some hysterical maroon thinks, oh, my God, we're going to crash!

Yeah I think the chances for misunderstanding are huge. It might be the same if you were listenening in on your own surgery. The fact that you don't understand the terminology and what is routine and what isn't might lead you to think: "I'm goin go die!" and become a hysterical maroon (although an anesthesized one).

Re: United\'s Channel 9

So it is just audio then. Or is there video too. I could understand why they wouldnt want it on if there was video.

Re: United\'s Channel 9

I personally do not think it is a good idea to have this feature. Not only things being blown out of proportion, but general misunderstandings, and assumption making!

Re: United\'s Channel 9

I am not too fond of the idea of cockpit radio comm's being broadcast to the pax. I can definately understand that people find this interesting, and why they want it. However, there are just too many things that could easily be misunderstood or blown out of proportion and cause more issues.

Another remote issue is that terrorists could use the radio comm's along with a flight phone to coordinate an attack.

just my .02 worth

Re: United\'s Channel 9

If you think channel 9 is cool you would love it on Kuwait Airways or Emirates. They both have cameras mounted on the front and directly under the plane so you can see "outside". LH has it too, but not on all aircraft. I loved watching the take off and approach… cool stuff and much better than channel 9 because there is no audio thus no misunderstanding by the pax – basically, what you see is what you get. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
