United (L-CAL) Begins Hiring

Actually it's one every 18 hours.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus that ate your iPhone.
I've heard a lot of rumors coming from a 787 pilot, and the head of training at UAL whose son is one of my students. But, their rumors so i'll keep them to myself... Just know that internal word has it that starting in Dec. 2012 one pilot will retire every 18 MINUTES until indefinite date..... that is all...

I have visions of drunk driving or secondhand smoke commercials but instead of melancholy slow motion shots of orphaned children or widows it's bald or white haired wrinkly old guys with experience sized beer bellies taking off the monkey suit and giving the middle finger.

I have visions of drunk driving or secondhand smoke commercials but instead of melancholy slow motion shots of orphaned children or widows it's bald or white haired wrinkly old guys with experience sized beer bellies taking off the monkey suit and giving the middle finger.

My visions are of the wrinkly old guys being forced out at gunpoint by us young punks after being granted 5 more years (well.... "young" is relative; I'm rapidly approaching geezer status too), to face 4 separate alimony payments, 10 child support payments, a boat that'll never be paid off, and a giant house with a second mortgage, where giggly half naked sorority girls with real jewelery and fake boobies spike the retirees' Ensure with Viagra until all that's left is a used up, dried up, leathery carcass with a smile.

This was posted on APC today take it for what its worth:

CAL will start hiring off the street in Nov. Airline apps should be opening soon. Format will be a personality profile questionnaire, three panel interview and sim ride.

Get your stuff ready and good luck.

PS...format may change or will not be setup by the initial few months of interviews.

At a job fair today, this is what was handed out by UAL:

Is United planning to hire in 2012 and 2013?
Yes. Until a joint collective bargaining agreement (JCBA) and an integrated seniority list (ISL) are implemented, legacy Continental Airlines (L-CAL) has a need for additional pilots. Class starts as early as November of 2012 are presently available.

Does United still have pilots on furlough?
Yes. Legacy United AIrlines (L-UAL) has not yet recalled any pilots who were furloughed in 2008. All pilots on this list have ben offered class dates at L-CAL however.

Whose contract and seniority list would I fall on?
All pilots hired before the JCBA and ISL are implemented would work under the terms of the L-CAL collective bargaining agreement and would be placed on the L-CAL seniority list.

What aircraft and bases can new hires expect?
We are filling vacancies on the 737 in EWR, IAH, CLE, and GUM. We are also filling vacancies on the 757/767 fleet in EWR and IAH.

Could a new hire get assigned to Guam?
Yes. Our Pacific operation is a critical element of our global network. Pilots staffed in Guam have a unique opportunity to fly throughout Micronesia and Asia. This is a 737 base only, and could be assigned to any class.

I was hired by United or Continental in 2008, but never started class. Am I still eligible?
Yes, pilots who received employment offers have been identified and will be contacted first for consideration with the new United Airlines.

I had an interview scheduled with United or Continental in 2008 that cancelled. Am I still eligible?
Pilots in this situation will be considered for processing based on the competitiveness for their qualifications by comparison to other applicants.

Where do I apply for a position at United?
We will be using AirlineApps.com going forward. Pilots who had previously applied to United Airlines will need to reapply through AirlineApps.com.

I have a Continental application already on file with AirlineApps.com; will I need to reapply?
No. We are updating portions of the application and will communicate with you directly if you need to update your application.

What will the new hiring process look like for the new United?
We will be combining best practices from both legacy airlines in our new process. Qualified applicants will be invited to take an online assessment first. Competitive applicants will then participate in a brief telephone screening. Applicants who continue to meet the desired criteria will then be invited to participate in a simulator evaluation and a panel interview at one of our training centers located in Denver or Houston.

What is the timeframe for hiring at United?
We will begin selecting applicants for interviews in the coming months to fill positions in 2012 and 2013.

How much hiring are you planning to do?
Our total numbers are dependent first on the decisions of the currently furloughed United pilots. They will always be given first preference for any class offering. Remaining positions will be filled by new-hire pilots from outside the company. As this number is unknown, we cannot project with certainty the total number of new hires. We are planning to fill 230 positions from January to May of 2013.

How wil my seniority work if I am hired?
A pilot hired from outside of the company will be placed on the L-CAL seniority list junior to any furloughed United pilot who accepts a class date regardless of when that furloughed United pilot comes to training.

What do retirements look like at United?
United will retire almost 4,000 pilots in the next 10 years, and by 2026 will retire 50% of those currently on the seniority lists.

What are minimum qualifications?
Minimum qualifications are being evaluated and will be posted on AirlineApps.com when they are finalized. Our most competitive candidates will have a combination of experience and qualifications that best fit the needs of the world's leading airline.

Why should I consider United Airlines?
United is the world's leading airline and is focused on being the airline customers want to fly, the airline employees what to work for and the airline shareholders want to invest in. Highlights of United Airlines include:
  • World's most comprehensive global route network, including world-class international gateways to Asia and Australia, Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East with non-stop or one-stop service from virtually anywhere in the United States.
  • A modern fleet which is the most fuel efficient (when adjusted for cabin size), and the best current aircraft order book among U.S. network carriers.
  • Industry-leading loyalty program that provides more opportunities to earn and redeem miles worldwide.
  • Optimal hub locations in 10 cities, including hubs in the four largest cities in the United States.
  • Rated the world's most admired airline on FORTUNE magazine's 2012 airline-industry list of World's Most Admired Companies.

THe chance of going to Guam is a little bothersome.

In the past I'm pretty certain you couldn't be forced to go. They used to offer year two pay to guys that did take it. I'd be interested in doing for a year... maybe. There are lots of big ass snakes out there so I don't know.

Pilot positions

Thank you for your interest in United Airlines. We plan to be hiring pilots in the fourth quarter of 2012 and in to 2013. In preparation for this hiring, we are updating our application and addendum to better reflect post merger requirements. These changes are nearly complete and we expect to start reviewing applications in the coming week.

Please make sure your United (previously Continental) application in Airline Apps is up to date and check back regularly for any announcements regarding application changes.

So what happens when a JCBA is finalized. New hires get furloughed?

The way I understand it is the new hires go to the bottom of the master list. L-UAL furloughs will be worked back into the system with new hires after JCBA is complete. That is if they even choose to come back. Of course the furloughs will have priority over the new hires when they are recalled. I would say that no more than a couple hundred is about all that will come back. Lots of them are to far up the list at other airlines to want to come back. Now if the new pilot contract is zzzomgzzz awesome (it probably won't be) they may get half back but still not many considering this is the start of about 50 new hires a month for the next 10-15 years.

I just flew with a furloughed L-UAL pilot. He has absolutely no intention of returning.

Go on.....

He was a junior FO on the 737 in the late '90s. He had a lot to say about the working conditions and the pay, and that it was the only flying job he had where he wanted to forget about all of it on his days off. Since then, they've taken so many concessions that even when he was offered recall several years back, he couldn't see himself going back. Truthfully, I didn't dig too deep. He's near retirement, and has been collecting a check airman paycheck until recently over here; for him, it was a better move to stay put.
