Unique Work Experience, how to list on E-Qip

Hey everyone,

An interesting question here. I'm 26 now, and have spent the past 8 years working as a volleyball coach (high school and club) and as a marching band instructor. The nature of the work is very seasonal, but I've been employed non-stop to some degree. I've also worked at various camps over the summers that add up to substantial hours.

I also worked for Circuit City, which just went out of business, for 3 months at one point. I can't find any sort of corporate contact or anything to verify employment for them.

How in the heck do I classify this type of employment? I worked with 7 different high schools as a coach, and 4 as an instructor. Most of the contacts probably aren't even with the programs/schools any longer. How should I handle all of this?

List them all. If the FAA really felt the need to check, they'd pull your tax records (you authorize it in one of your forms) to verify your employment history and to see if you left out something. Otherwise, you have to report everything and leave no gaps in employment. I had several positions over the last 7 years, and some of the managers/supervisors are not there anymore, but I put their names and the generic company phone number anyway. In a background check (at least for the Secret and Top Secret levels) that require in-person interviews, they basically want to verify your employment with your supervisor. If the supervisor is no longer there, then the company will tell the investigator that, and they usually move on to the next one.

For Circuit City or any other company that went out of business, just make a note on the e-QIP (there is a section for each position to add notes) that the company is out of business, and you do not know the manager's name or number. When you save the form, you will get an error if you left it blank, but then just check the box that says, "I do not know the information."

Thanks a ton! Gosh, so many jobs that I have to remember. Will it be horrible if i accidently leave something out?

I wouldn't chance it too much, but include as much as you can. I think the thing they're looking for is that someone can verify your whereabouts for the past 7 years and acknowledge that you were A) employed, and B) not plotting against the country. If you didn't have a job for any period of time, you'll also have to document that, as well as provide the name of someone that can vouch for your unemployment. It gets harder as you go along, because you can only use each verification person once, and they cannot be your relatives. So for example, once your college roommate has been used to vouch for you living on campus, he can't be used to vouch for you working your unemployment during that same time period.

Off topic from main subject but regarding the E-QIP... does anything need to be faxed in after completing the E-QIP online? I didn't think so, thought the signature forms we just turn in when we go to PEPC, but read on another thread here somewhere that people were faxing stuff in for their E-QIP.. any thoughts?

I suppose that over the course of the last 7 years I've never actually been unemployed. I was employed by the same volleyball club for 6 years and now a new one for two years. I mean, the volleyball season only really lasted from october through july, but i was still employed by the club during the offseason. does that count as employment or unemployment?

Contract employment is often understood to be seasonal.

For example: A teacher wouldn't consider themselves unemployed from June-August. Unless of course they were off contract during that time.

So does that mean I could consider myself continually employed? I wouldn't have to count the rest as unemployed?

When I originally applied I made sure to really hit the jobs that involved teamwork/decision making/coordination etc. Example would be a cook at Perkins with a full wheel of orders that need to go out in a timely efficient order. Or a I had a job asat a radio station and I really worked that angle as we were all about efficiency time is money etc. Warehouse jobs could be a great sell if you word it right. Hope this helps and take your time, choose your words carefully so as to sell yourself. Fill in gaps with any volunteer work youve ever done.

It's not about jobs that made you work hard and realize the value money/time. It's about three years of progressive work experience, where you were entrusted with more and more as you worked there. For instance, you started at Perkins' as a dishwasher, then moved up to a line cook after 6 months, then up to head cook after a year, etc.

You don't have to fax anything. At the end of you eqip you can print out a copy for your own records and there is a signature page at the end. You can sign that and bring it with you to your PEPC and give it to them during you "security" portion. If you forget it they do have another copy and they will just get you to sign it then.

I think it is more about what can be verified. You could find out from your previous employers what they consider to be continually employed. Post PEPC, whoever you list as the person that can verify that you were employed by "Dover High School" will ultimately have to fill out a form verifying that this is the truth.

On a side note, I listed two companies that are no longer in business, one was an air charter company and the other was a local FBO. I was able to find my supervisors home number and address and list them that way.
