Uniforms

Walking around the airports lately I notice lots of pilots looking pretty sloppy. I know these threads usually create some type of drama, and everyone has an opinion, but it makes the pilot group in general look bad if one person walks around with and oversized, wrinkled uniform, with coffee stains all over it, with the shirt hanging out. Not all, of course. Lots of guys take pride in what they do and look sharp as well.

The passengers dont know who flies for who, or any of that. They see a pilot, then form some opinion about the whole group. May sound stupid but its true, and I see it all the time. That reflects poorly on pilots in general, and people will even more think of us as bus drivers.

Also, why does wearing the hat, if its optional for your airline make you a tool all the sudden? How many here wear it? Is it optional for you? I think it looks good, completes the uniform, as well as sets us apart from all the other professions out there. If I get past training, I will put in the order for a hat and wear it, especially since without it our pilots look like F/As with those thin stripes. (no offense to F/As).

Won't mention the leather jackets, either.

It's prob. been beaten up already but..

Just something I was thinking about before hitting the books again.

Rock on :rawk:

I wear the hat when I wear my blazer and in the winter months. It's not required all year around for us and I don't wear it when I wear the shirt with no blazer during those months.

Hat/no hat, blazer/no blazer, trenchcoat/lather jacket/naked, I think it all looks fine if worn professionally.

My only preference would be 1 standard for everyone, and not 15 "optional" things. If nothing else a uniform should look...uniform :)

I agree! Nothing, and I mean nothing, looks as sharp as a man (or woman) in an aviation uniform. Of course, I prefer the hat, but to each his own.

The hat is not optional at my company, even though most pilots who are off probation don't wear it. I wear it because it does complete the uniform, and it makes me look taller (at 5'1" I need all the help I can get!)

I've lost 35 lbs since I've been working at this company, and now my uniform just hangs off of me. The pissed-off Irish guy who measured us for our suits wouldn't let me get a "girly" tie, so that combined with my huge uniform makes me look like K.D. Lang in her father's suit. Unprofessional, but what can I do? Thankfully, I just got a uniform allowance and clothes that actually fit are on the way!

I agree you with you 100%. Maybe its the military in me, but pilots definitely should take pride in wearing their uniform. Take 10 minutes on your overnights to iron your shirt. Unfortunately sometimes coffee stains and made that day, so unless you have a long sit in a domicile, you just have to sport the brown spot.

As for hats, I dont like wearing them. Its optional at my company, so I choose not to. But I dont clown anyone for doing it.

My woman thinks the entire uniform looks stupid and she thinks that I look like a kid playing dress up.

Hats are required at my place, but I'd guess 60% of the guys don't wear them. Maybe its my military background talking, but I think its disrespectful to your Company and its clients (the passengers) to walk around without the complete uniform or with non-uniform jackets, etc. on.

More so, I look like I'm 14 and I've still got acne. If you're at work tomorrow you can see me bumming around Newark for about two hours in the morning!

Ah, too bad, John. I'd love to see what a 14 year old pilot looks like! :p I won't be there tomorrow, but WILL be there Friday AND Saturday morning. :)

mannn, I have have the babyface too:banghead::banghead:, do you know how many places I go and they think I am 12 besides my hight? especially when I sit down I have that droopy posture and then when I get up people are like WOW you are tall, I am like noo I am only 6'0. but yeah I wish i had a more mature face.

Don't worry about looking young. You'll be thankful when you're 50 and look at least 10-15 years younger. Trust me on that one...;)
I know it's annoying now, but you'll be happy down the road, believe me! :)

Im glad you dont see me after being awake for 31 hours on a commute home. I try to keep to my uniform shirts pressed and looking good esp when I have time to do such, but when I get in after a long night and im in a rush to catch a flight thats going to get me home to my bed, family and girlfriend, the last thing I am worried about is what the blue haired lady in 7B thinks about my appearance.

Other than those few random occurances, I do make sure my shirts are starched, ironed and lookin smooth pimpin...:D

14? You're being generous John, I wouldn't put you a day over 12. :p

All kidding aside, I have to say I kinda agree with Em. I thought the same thing when we caught that flight to SLC a couple of weeks ago. Sorry bro.

There are times when its completely understandable, especially with the busy schedules some pilots have. But there are others out there who just throw any old thing on and go flyin'. This isnt the local FBO anymore where your flying a piper cup in a hawaiian shirt with the window open.... as awesome as that is.

Nothin' to be sorry about man, it's the truth! All in all I look like a complete idiot in the uniform and run into the, "Are you old enough to fly" line at work a lot.

:yeahthat: Great post. I agree about the hat completely. It's required at my current company, but it was optional at Pinnacle, and I still wore it there too. The uniform just doesn't look right without it. Tradition is a good thing.

LOL.
Pinnacle is such a uniform guy, rallying around the hat and everything else after spending a hundred grand to buy a job.
It seems to me the only reason he wanted to be a pilot was to wear a uniform. Enjoy your hat pal as you slink around Atlanta.
I'm tired of these (deleted) bags we have to work amongst.
