UND's CFIs can't land. -Part II.

Didn't want to ruin TX's original thread, so here we are, part II of CFIs can't land.

Today, one of UND's Seminoles landed gear up at GFK... A CFI was on board as well as a UND student.

Now, i have not heard the official story from UND, so i'm just making assumptions... but as far as i heard, the aircraft was not suffering any failures to it's landing gear system prior to landing. Heck, the gear was even cycled with no problems back in the Mx hanger after it was dragged off the runway.

...so i guess someone just forgot to make the "Gears down - Three Greens" call... and neglected to care for the sirens that came on when the power is pulled to idle w/ gears up, and still commited to landing.

As a result there was a brief GFK ground stop issued since it was on the "big" runway. Unfortunate.
 
After these accidents, I wouldn't be surprised to see UND's insurer want a safety pilot in the back seat to yell "GO AROUND." That would have saved about all of the recent mishaps.

What might be worse is the absolute lack of communication with the students at UND right now. Nobody knows what is going on, and since UND won't say anything about anything at all, rumors are going haywire. They really need some PR/Communications folks up here. I'm surprised the Herald picked it up, they didn't get much of a comment, however.

Anyway, at least no one has been severely injured in any of the 6 (is it 6 now?) accidents/incidents that have occurred here in the last month.

Couldn't have picked a worse time for a standown, too... the WX is perfect, probably the last time it will be until May.
 
Real life emergencies... I guess this is part of the new college curriculum which allows students the ability to be hired at the airlines with reduced hours.

The only thing the students are hearing officially is the recording on the Flight Restriction line, and the posting on the door of dispatch which says "MANDATORY FLIGHT OPS MEETING 5PM CLIFFORD HALL".

As the saying goes, "what we have here is a breakdown of communication."

Why don't we just have a meeting in the Chester Fritz with all aerospace students/faculty/staff/instructors as a forum to voice concerns, suggestions, and questions? There is obviously something wrong and it needs to be fixed.

BTW, this couldn't have happened at a worse time. Guess who was on site today? The new director of FSDO...
 
Yup no malfunctions but more of a CFI error. At the flight ops meeting we went to the student said that the instructor was doing everything so he was not sure who was flying. Adjusting power, adding flaps, putting the gear down...errrr except that.

when i was there all of my instructors made it very clear that if NOTHING else, we were going to make DAMN SURE who is FLYING THE PLANE with a very clear, ALWAYS acknowledged "MY CONTROLS" "YOUR CONTROLS" "MY CONTROLS"

there was NEVER a question of who was actually doing the flying.

what in the hell is going on now? thats like a very BASIC and FUNDAMENTAL key to instructing...isnt it??

Sounds like instructing 101 to me. I will agree, how can this have been any question at all? That is taught since 102........amazing.

Holy crap, you actually LIKE something that's standardized???

I gotta go find me a bunker somewhere, preferably in Hawaii, since the sky is falling and hell's freezing over...

So much for the "positive" transfer of the "Gear down, flaps 40, final check" call we were taught in the Warrior. What a joke. Glad they finally changed that crap.

obviously its not very standardized. and hell freezing? yeah thats typical north dakota weather.
 
100,000 hours of flight training annually.
120 aircraft.

Our flight school has nine. I am not surprised by this number of accident/incidents. They are just in a funk and this is what that looks like when you have 120 planes.
 
How many CFI's did they hire this past summer? I would have bet very few since there can't be that much attrition.

How many of these incidents have been with the Chinese Students? As an Alumni i'm scratching my head as to what the issues are. Wondering if it may be about time for UND get rid of these foreign contracts. When i was there it didn't seem like people were incapable of flying just very anal with small detail and very trivial with knowledge.​

i think UND has hired around 40-50 instructors this year!
