Ummm . . . was that piece of the wing important?

And I thought only older aircraft had slats

I think the only transport-category aircraft flying without slats are the DC-9-15, ERJ's and CRJ-50.

Correcto!

Embarassingly, I always forget about that thing. And I used to work at Skyway.

Brian - the 757 IS an old airplane - the first one rolled off the assembly line in 1982 which puts the design work of the aircraft in the late 1970's.

Doug - maybe those are the only airliners but there are alot of business jets out there certified as 'transport category' that don't have slats.

Ok ok ok! Most transport-category jet-powered part-121 scheduled airliners...

Ok that about covers it

I was glad to see they put the slats on the CRJ70 - the 50 is just a little too hot to get into the smaller airports - I can't imagine what the 70 would have been like.

Don't forget the DC-8 either! No slats.....

Of course, most sweptwing jets have a (+) deck angle on final....What the heck is with the CRJ?!?!

Like Doug said, I think the 9-10, and the RJs are the only airliners withOUT slats.

A lot of Biz jets HAVE slats too....
Saberliners
Jetstars
Global Express
Falcon (10, 20, 50, 2000, 900, 7X)
C750
Astra
G200

The only sweptwing biz jets I can think of without slats are the Hawkers/Gulfstreams/Challengers/Beechjets.

And yes....here it goes.........I didn't include Lears as sweptwing (13 degrees).

Brian almost all commerical airlines are going to have slats to help aid with the slow speed needed for take-off and touch down.
The 777 is a new design and it has slats as will the 7E7.A modern day jetliner without slats would be bad you'd have fly the plane in at higher speeds to maintain lift in both takeoff and touch down.

HaHaHa. too bad neither of em are here to Battle Royale over it.

alrighty. I am wondering about this now. What does wing slat do? what is positive deck angle? Please bear with me cause I am still "new" PPL

Swept wings will lead to a higher AoA to achieve the same thing, so that is part of why the deck angle is higher on a swept wing aircraft even without LEDs.

Aircraft without LEDs are known as "hard wings" in the industry, and those with as "soft wings". A bit of interesting info for you:

There has NEVER been an accident due to inflight icing or failure to not get deiced prior to departure in a soft-wing aircraft.

(Before you point to Air Florida, that aircraft would have flown if they had tried adding more than 60% thrust. Doubtful it would have cleared the bridge at that power setting even with totally clean wings.)

I had an old crusty UPS Captain get in the jumpseat one day(in the CRJ) - he apparently didn't do much offline traveling - he had never been on a CRJ let alone in the jumpseat - on the final because of the height of the jumpseat and the nose down pitch attitude all he could see was grass - he never said anything to us but you could tell by his body language that he was very, very nervous - kind of funny to watch.
