Ukraine International Airlines

so due to my sister in laws school suddenly deciding to push the start of class up a month, I am finding myself in need of purchasing her a 1 way ticket from JFK to Istanbul. To modify her current return flight on British Airways to the new return date would cost a staggering $1500 which I just can't afford right now. However, in the tickets I can afford there is either Etihad with a 33 hour layover in Abu Dhabi which id prefer her not to have to suffer through, or a flight on Ukraine International with a 2.5 hour layover in Kiev. Does anyone have any experience with this airline? Safe? Reputable? And the airport in Kiev? Will her luggage follow her to Turkey or be sold to fund the seperatist cause? I feel a little nervous about sending a 20 yr old girl to Ukraine but I don't know enough about the airport to make an informed decision.

They are alright. Nothing to write home about, good or bad. Last I heard the food is meh.
You're not sending a girl to Ukraine, just a short layover in KBP. She won't have time to go anywhere anyways, the airport is a good hr or more from the city center.
There's a whole lot of nothing to do outside of the security area, so no real good reason for her to go out. Haven't been there in a while, so not sure about the food options inside, but the restrooms were clean.
Baggage - same as anywhere else in the 3rd world. Can be ok, can be not ok. Getting anything out of PS (If that's what they are still called) in terms of compensation is a waste of time.

PS @NovemberEcho Heads up on the following, read the fine print

Like lowcost-carriers UIA doesn't offer free catering on board excepting a free glass of water. However, passengers may order prepaid meals.(that's the meh ones)

Since June 2016 most of UIA's international flights are sold with the basic "hand luggage-only tariff". If passengers are booking this tariff and want to check in luggage, fees up to 60 USD per flight will be charged.

KBP is an OK airport as BigZ said, then again its been a decade since I was there. Transit should be easy.

33 hours in Dubai would really require a hotel, so tack on another $200. Uber works in Dubai (not Abu Dhabi oddly). Local is cheap and all seem to be those small four door Lexus (at least that's all I get in 10+ trips). Le Meridien is a 4 min ride and they have car service, nice rooms and tons of food places

Whoa whoa whoa, can't you cover the 15 with one overtime shift? I thought you ATCers had it all!
