Not the tiller. The tiller is quite quiet and very touchy (at least in the sim). The "racheting" sound you hear is one of the knobs on the Flight Guidance Panel being turned. Since he mentions a heading on takeoff, I'm guess he was turning a course selector knob to match up with the heading (common technique at XJT).

Yes it is the flight guidance knobs right below where they have the camera mounted. Spinning in an altitude or heading or something.

Hmmmmm, we have a member named Atooraya here too.

I've flown with some pretty cool captains, but the tone in the cockpit has never been like that during that phase of flight.

Also, I've never had to set the flight guidance (course/heading/speed/altitude) that much right before takeoff like that either. I wonder why that happened.
