UAL Recall Rumors

Heard a rumor that United is going to begin recalling pilots later this year. Should have 40 back by the end of December.

Good news for us all!

Sounds very good! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif In fact, I believe that in June, United had to cancel some flights on its 737s due to a crew scheduling error...they must have temporarily solved that without having to recall any pilots...but I knew that eventually they'd have to recall some. Do you know if the pilot retirements at United are anywhere close to the number of retirements at Delta?

Anyway, even though I'm just a student, I am very excited to hear about these recalls!

This is good to hear. Knowing one of the last pilots to get the big "F" letter it makes me happy there is a chance he will be back with UAL before years end. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Smilecrunch.gif

Hopefully AA will follow suit next year. I think it would be an ignorant comment to suggest the same for USAir. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

PILOT RECALLS BEGIN NOV. 1

Good morning. This is Captain Steve Forte on Thursday, September 2.

I am pleased to report that we will begin recalling furloughed pilots on
November 1. The recalls will begin modestly - with 40 total by the end
of the year. Pilots will be notified by mail of the exact date of their
return.

This recall comes in response to an increase in pilot hours, normal
employee attrition and projected retirements. This gradual start-up
will allow us to train pilots and staff flights efficiently while
maintaining a smooth transition for our employees returning to the line.
We expect that some recalled pilots will be back flying for United as
early as December.

In addition to the recalls, we recently posted 95 new bids, creating
opportunities in both the captain and first officer ranks to move to
more senior positions. The bids close on September 6.

We're continuing to evaluate manpower needs for next year, in an
environment that keeps shifting rapidly. I'll have information about
recalls for 2005 later this year and will share it with you as quickly
as it's available. In the meantime, we are increasing capacity at the
Flight Training Center so that we are ready for our returning pilots in
November and beyond.

As someone who's been furloughed in the past, I appreciate what this
development means for our furloughed pilots and for our company at
large. I look forward to personally welcoming our recalled pilots back
to the property and sincerely appreciate the hard work that all of you
are doing day-in and day-out to keep our operation strong.

That's it for today. Fly safe and let's keep running a great airline.

A bunch of the United guys in our class were talking about the rumor earlier this week because they were looking at the need for flying later this year and saying that the current amount of pilots could not sustain it. Thus they would be recalled.

However, most of the guys now in our class are at the bottom there, so they'll be here a while. A few of them complained openly during class to the instructor about not being paid during school. I was really shocked at the cahones they had to say that to their faces.

But thats besides the point. I'm happy for them, and besides for every United guy that gets recalled I move up one spot!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buck.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buck.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buck.gif

Good for them ... it's the only way it'll change (and not getting paid during training is a crock).

This is a wolf(e) in sheeps clothing...

The interesting thing is they have had FAR more retirements than that, and their retirement rate is currently MUCH higher than normal (due to the potential loss of the retirements funds, anyone close is grabbing the money and running).

These 40 aren't even close to making up for those who have retired out since the last furlough phase...

The contraction continues at UAL...

Falcon, you're certainly right about that, no doubt. But even still I'm glad to see the guys involuntarily dropped from the bottom coming back, even if it is just a few. At least the retirements are by choice.

True, it is good to see a few people back to work (for the time being, anyhow)... I certainly wouldn't take this as any indication that the tide has turned at UAL... They are FAR from being out of the woods yet...

You know I hadn't wanted to mention this, but UAL is talking about laying off 6,000 more employee's, I wonder how many of those 40 recalled pilots will be in that 6,000.

I heard the cuts where on the entry-level side, ala, CSA, rampers, etc, etc.

They will be recalling pilots, currently recalling 375 FA's.

there was a thread just last week about the cuts and from what that thread read was that they were managerial & clerical layoffs.

USAToday Money had 6,000 cut, none pilot or fa. Most were to be CSA and ramp jobs.

Who knows that's just one source.

Well in that case this is excellant news! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, as Doug said these recalls were announced subsequent to the other cuts. The pilot and FA recalls will help cover attrition from retirements and folks leaving the company.

UAL ain't out of the woods yet, not by a long shot, but baby steps are baby steps and you've got to crawl before you walk.
