Two things that made me do a double-take

Seeing someone smoking in an airline terminal while strolling to their gate. It was even more interesting considering it was an airline captain. Smoking is prohibited, but apparently pilots are exempt!

Seeing FAs wearing hats while strolling to their gate.

Honestly, I felt like I was in a time warp and was back in the 60s. It made me, the Captain and FO I was traveling with sigh and say how those were very interesting times in the airline industry.

BTW, the airport was in Kuwait and you could tell that air crews are treated like royalty. Hell, we were commercialing back to JFK and were pulled off regular lines and put at the head of them.

Everyday in Europe! :)

"Captain Captain!"

And whenever you need something, it's taken care of quickly without quibble.

I've heard that, but haven't seen it in both Germany and Portugal. I found it strange that it was in the Middle East of all places. Don't even get me started on how we were treated a the hotel! Suffice it to say they had to drag me out of the hotel kicking and screaming...:D

even flying a 401 in Turks and Caicos, I was always referred to as Captain, and given great respect and deferential treatment...

Yeah. They try and sell you trinkets on the beach.:)

I hear strange tales of the 'Mexican Trinket Market'.

I was mostly just referring to how you get treated as a pilot down thataways.

Most courteous ramp crews I've ever seen. Hotel folks trip over themselves to cater to you at times. Strange. Not used to that.

Do they also want to know if they can "ax" you a question? :D

Yeah. Its like fingernails on a chalk board when I hear that on a PA. I get accents, slang, etc, but you can't just rearrange the way letters are pronounced. That's just not fair.

And that goes for you too Mr. Favre

I'd like to know what foreign crews think when they come to the US and nobody respects the captains authority, the FO is just some dude in a uniform and the flight attendants are just hot foreign chicks who pour drinks. They must love coming here.

I heard a gate agent screaming "can you hear me now?" over the PA in ATL yesterday.

I felt the same way when I was at Toronto City/ Island the other day (never have been there before). We hopped on the ferry to grab some lunch in the city and there were a few Porter Airlines crews on there as well. They looked very professional and the FA's had retro outfits, the round hats, and high heels. I thought maybe I had walked on the set of "catch me if you can" or something. No one was smoking though haha. I guess the Canadians know how to do an airline right?

That is a neat little airport. I wish I could go their more instead of Oshawa. The only downside is that the FBO has modern/ uncomfortable chairs in the pilots lounge that are nearly impossible to catch some sleep in.

I can't even get em to verify the weights (totally illegible handwriting) without getting a bunch of 'tude for it. It's a totally different world out there.

Yep! Everywhere in the Caribbean. "Hey Cap, need some fuel Cap?!"

Mexico was great about that as well; doesn't matter if you wear 3 stripes or not. Eeeeveryone's a captain. :D

I was just happy that airport maintenance came by and asked me if was planning on using Bravo taxiway yesterday (I was). They were kind enough to inform me that a 6 foot deep sinkhole had enveloped it.

Normally I discover such surprises on my own ;)

Last summer in the Beruit airport it seemed like half the passengers lit up while walking to customs. After seeing that I was almost suprised that nobody tried to smoke on the plane itself. Two guys even had a conversation about whether they could smoke or not in the terminal as the corridor was lined with no smoking signs. They finally just said might as well, everybody else is doing it.
