Tubes in Ears

My doc is sending me to an Ear/Nose/Throat doc about fluid behind my ear drums. Result will be to temporary place tubes in my ears to drain the fluid. Has anyone had this done and what will it do to me while flying? I have heard that I will need to use ear plugs for shower and pool, but wonder about the pressure changes in flying. I will ask the doc too, but I haven't gotten the appointment scheduled yet.

I've had about 5 or 6 sets of tubes when I was a little kid. You will need to use ear plugs for showers and swimming. Pressure changes from flying will be no issue since the tube is an open passage through the ear drum.

I have not had them in about 15 years so I can't remember if there is any hearing loss associated when the tubes are in the ear. I will say that after all the sets of tubes I've had I do have hearing loss from the scar tissue that forms on the eardrum. I'm not deaf but I do notice the hear loss in certain situations.

I had tubes as well when I was younger. All I really remember is the swimming and showering thing with using ear plugs to keep the ears dry. Hopefully it won't affect flying for you. I do think I took a commercial flight while the plugs were still in down to my grandparents house. So hopefully it won't be an issue for you.

I had tubes inserted into me in Grade 2 and the tubes came out in Grade 7. I went on Commercial flights when i had the tubes in my ear. Only restriciton was that i had to wear ear tubes in the first couple months after the insertion.
 
What these guys said...Got them in when I was 2 and had them tell I was 6. Anybody else have to use those big globby wax ear plugs or was that just me?

Have they tried decongestants ? antihistamines ? Sorry to play armchair doctoring here, but I have sinus problems and my doc said I had a bulgeing eardrum and to take a antihistamine and decongestant, worked for me. Just curious.
 
for sinus problems, i always use the sudafed non-drying sinus stuff.. does the trick everytime!!
 
I've used my fair share of the old wax earplugs! Hate the damn things. How about the form fitted ones that looked pink like bubble gum...much better than the wax ones!
 
We have tried multiple other ideas, I have had problems with ear infections for years (since I moved back north). I find out more next week about scheduling the visit to the ENT doc.
