As one would imagine TSA did not place high on the list:D 213th out of 231.

Yesterday, the Partnership for Public Service released the 2009 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings. The rankings evaluate employee satisfaction across government in 278 federal agencies and subcomponents.

Top honors for large agencies went to: 1) Nuclear Regulatory Commission; 2) Government Accountability Office; 3) National Aeronautics and Space Administration; 4) Intelligence Community; and 5) Department of State.

Top honors for small agencies went to: 1) Surface Transportation Board; 2) Overseas Private Investment Corporation; 3) Congressional Budget Office; 3) Office of Management and Budget; and 5) National Science Foundation.

"This report cuts to the heart of what really matters to employees-issues of leadership, pay and benefits, training and a strong work-life balance," said NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley. "This year's rankings provide an excellent opportunity for agencies to re-examine their workplaces and work with frontline employees and their representatives to make immediate and concrete improvements."

National Treasury Employee Union issued a press release addressing the comparatively low ranking of the Department of Homeland Security. DHS is 28th out of the 30 ranked agencies. In addition to its overall ranking, DHS was ranked at, or near, the bottom of all surveyed agencies in 10 separate workplace categories, including employees skills and mission match; leadership; work-life balance; teamwork; pay and benefits, training and development; workplace diversity; strategic management; performance-<wbr>based rewards and advancement; and family-friendly culture and benefits.

President Kelley noted that two DHS subcomponent agencies, CBP and TSA, also ranked very poorly in the rankings. Out of 231 subcomponent federal agencies whose employees were surveyed, CBP ranked 178th, while TSA ranked 213th.

That is an interesting study. I would love to compare the pay between the top and the bottom agencies on the list. I can't promise, but I bet the pay is much better for the nuclear peeps than it is for the CBP peeps.

Just an observation, of course.

It would be difficult to compare except for straight up pay. The Gov has multiple pay systems. GS, GM, GL, FO, FP, VHA, WG, WL, WS, SES, EX, SL, ST, AL

Well, you get the picture, all have their own scale, cost of living, Etc. The only thing that limits them is they can't make more than the prez:D

Federal pay is straight up WHACK!!! Since I am an active duty guy, it's pretty simple. Now for the air reserve techs...when they fly, they have about 9 different statuses they can be in. I have been flying with them for about 3 years now and STILL don't see how they all figure it out!

Top honors for small agencies went to: 1) Surface Transportation Board;

What's the "Surface Transportation Board" ? Railroads ? Trains are every bit as cool as airplanes. And, the bar car is much more comfortable than sucking down miniatures with your knees up under your chin.

Know a guy who retired as an FAA air carrier inspector. He said the FAA was the most incompetent organization he'd ever seen...from the guy who emptied wastebaskets at night in the FSDOs to the pencil monkeys in DC.

And this from a guy who spent 50 years in aviation in every job category you can name.

When people with 50 years experience speak, you'd be wise to listen.

The federal government is like any other huge organization. You've got incompetent people who are able to hide because the organization is so huge, and who are proud of the fact that they get a paycheck for sitting on their ass with one thumb up their butt and one thumb in their mouth playing switch.

Then you've got some people who actually work hard and get the work done. For example, a lot of people at Treasury right now have cots in their office so they can get a few hours of sleep without going home.

Man, to have a bed in your office......That would be way too tempting.

Right on with the first paragraph. Almost all large organizations have this issue, it just seems like all the upper echelons of the TSA brass have this problem.
