How many other 4 eyed pilots out there use Transition lens ????? I need to get new glasses and I was wondering if they are worth the extra cash or can become a hinderance while flying IFR in and out of clouds ??? Or should I just stay with the pair of regular lens and a pair of sunglasses ???

Thanx for everyone's input !!

I have em, they SUCK! The transition is caused by UV hitting the lens, remember from high school physis, UV does not pass through glass, hence no suntanning in your living room! SOOOO, if you are getting them so you have sunglasses in the cockpit, you are SOL, because the windscreen blocks out almost all the UV.

The other downside is, these stupid things take forever to lighten up when you go indoors, so you walk around for almost 15 minutes with that stupid half greyed out glasses look. It is nothing like the commercial where they go instantly to dark and clear.

If you can, wear contacts, there are some really nice feeling disposables out there now, and get a pair of Serengeti sunglasses. Those are great for hazy days and you can still see all the digital stuff in the cockpit.

I'll second what dugie said. I wore transitions for a year and I could not wait to get rid of them they were junk. When flying or driving the lenses don't tint. I just started wearing contact lenses with regular sunglasses. My biggest complain about the transition lenses were when you walk into a building from outside it takes quite a while (10 minutes) for the lenses to turn back completely clear.

I don't have them but I do have a pair of prescription sunglasses (people have told me I look like one of the bad guys in the "matrix" because I wear them indoors sometimes)

"well mr. smith.. " (that guy)

I heard the transitions can suck but haven't tried em', I do love my lenscrafter rayban rx sunglasses though with non polari.. geez this post is getting difficult on the spelling..anyway you know what I mean! They are perfect for flying.
