Transceivers

I am thinking about buying a handheld transceiver. Any suggestions out there. I'm going to use it as a backup and for getting clearances and such.

I have a YAESU one....

I haven't ever used it in the air, I got it mainly to listen to tower and stuff when I'm at home or out at the airport.

Oh ...and don't know if it's against any *rules* or not but I actually have used it on commercial a/c. I just like to follow our aircraft along from center to center and stuff. That works pretty well come to think of it. This was all pre-9/11 and I'm not stupid enough to actually try and talk on it either.

But yeah, it kinda sucks on the ground. Especially if you're not right next to an airport.

Oh and no matter which one you buy...READ the instructions. I know this one has so many problems with it if you don't charge it just so, or store it without the attenna and stuff.

I have the Vertex VXA-700 and it is GREAT!

Here is a similar post to yours that I made a couple months ago for more information.

I'll stand by the posts I made in that other thread. And just say again here that for $250, the A5 is about the cheapest deal going out there, unless you go down to the cheapo sporty's or jrc brands (which I think now actually retail higher than the Icom).

If you want better battery like, Ham frequencies, a more rugged design, then go for the Vertex VXA-700.

Ebay prices have gone up lately. It is hard to find anything much less than the $250 price the Icom A5 runs for new at Avionics West.

That sounds really cool, anyone know for sure if airlines have a problem with this?

I was looking at the A5, but I noticed on one of the web pages that the headset adapter might not be compatible with some models (Lightspeed 20xl2 in my case). Any truth to this?

All I would do would be to look up the frequencies that we would most likely encounter along the flight in case I missed the call over. I would have my CD player sitting on my lap and my transceiver the one actually plugged into my headphones.

I loved doing that. It's not very often when a capt will put the atc conversations on the radio like channel 9 or something like they sometimes do so I just decided to bring along my own.
