Tower only facilities

I'm thinking about expressing a geographic preference for the DC area, but there aren't any up/down facilities there. DCA, IAD and BWI are all towers and Potomac Large Tracon handles the rest of the terminal duty.

If I were to be assigned a tower-only facility, would I ever have the chance to become certified at TRACON work? Or would I pretty much be limited to towers for the rest of my FAA career?

I'm wondering the same thing. I was assigned to a tower-only facility and tried to request a transfer to an up/down (my request was denied). I really want to learn radar too. Am I doomed for the rest of my career?

Being assigned to a tower only facility does not doom you to tower for the rest of your life. Many people have started out at small, tower only facilities before moving onto larger up/downs.
