Touring Travolta's 707

Well, there we were, pulling off the runway at Stewart Field in Newburgh, NY. I looked on the ramp to see a Boeing 707. As a former 707 driver, things like that tend to catch my eye. But what REALLY caught my eye was that this jet was painted up in Qantas livery. Since I was pretty sure that Qantas hadn't opened up transoceanic 707 service, that could only mean one thing--that this beautiful jet belonged to none other than Mr. John Travolta. I pointed it out to the captain as we taxiied by, and I joked that I should go over and say hi since I'm a 707 pilot too! We parked two slots away, and the captain asked, "do you REALLY want to go over there?" So we did!

After we got our jet ready to go for our flight, we walked over to the aircraft. A security guy for the airport was at the base of the stairs. We asked if we could look around, and he informed us that we weren't even supposed to have walked over, because we didn't have the right badges ("Badges? We don't need no steenkin' badges!"). About that time, one of the pilots appeared at the top of the stairs and waved us up. At that point the security guy stepped aside and we went up to look around.

We were met by Juan Serrano, JT's chief pilot, and a couple of other crewmembers. They were all very nice and I think they get a kick out of showing off their ride! The flight deck was much like the 707 cockpit I was used to, with a few extra toys. JT has modified the plane to be RVSM-capable, a rare thing for 707s. He even had to pay for all the testing himself, since no one else is sinking that kind of money in to 707s these days! The flight engineer panel was more crowded than I was used to on our model, as well.

From there, we went through the cabin. The lav was at the front and includes a full shower! Very nicely appointed, as you would probably guess. Aft of this was the "kids' room." There were a couple of first-class type airline seats (but nicer!) and a sofa that folds out into a bed.

Aft of this was the main cabin, or what in a jet like this would more accurately called "the salon." There were several very comfy seats, tables, TVs on the walls, and so on.

Next was the galley. A FULL galley. Apparently, there's no shortage of food on those long flights with Travolta! :)

All in all, it was a really neat experience, and (if they're reading this), special thanks to the crew of Jett Clipper Ella for letting some airline guys have a look around!

Nice! Did you ask them if JT ever got up in the cockpit with them and blurted out: "My controls." ???

If he does do that, I would imagine that the Captain would have to be a bit more sensitive when something was not going quite right and he had to correct JT about something he was doing. Now, that would be an awkward situation for JT's Captain.

Actually, Travolta is fully qualified in the airplane! Juan said it's tough to maintain currency, as a matter of fact, cause JT takes most of the landings!

glad you guys got to tour! that would make an awesome NJC vegas tour or what not...at least i would have loved to be there!

I just started flying with a guy that worked as Travolta's FE a few years back. Lots of interesting stories.

I got bored one day and hopped on the FAA website and looked him up. Mr. Travolta is quite the qualified pilot...:D

Awesome story!... Quite a sweet deal ya stumbled upon! Where was Johnny boy?

I hope to someday have similar, cool stories....

Off doing some important actor stuff, I guess. First word we got from our rampers before we walked over was that he had just gone onboard, but it wasn't him (and to be honest, NONE of the three crewmembers onboard looked ANYTHING like him, even from a distance.

Now, if Kelly Preston had been on board, we might have had a late departure. I'd have made excuses to sit and talk with her ALL DAY..... :)

Coming back from a charter in a C-421, I saw an F-28 on the ramp, and had never seen one. Invited aboard, it was plush !! Behind one seat was a cardboard guitar with 'Boston Loves Elvis" on it....first I knew it was Presley's plane (chartered). We drank coffee, talked about flying Elvis and one of the pilots said: "We have to get ready, he'll be here in 12 minutes." 12 MINUTES? "Yes, it's all down to the second. We're already filed and checklists complete."
As I went down the stairs there were about 12 people, two lines, that came from somewhere to tell him 'goodbye'. I stepped off to the side. 3 Limo's came tearing around the airport and Elvis got out of the middle one. Everyone rushed on board. When he got to me, I just held up a hand and said "Mr. Presely, I'm just an out-sider and not really supposed to be here." He said: "Aw, that's alright. It's good to see ya'."
As he was saying goodbye, the right engine was turning....as he stepped on the stairs, the left engine was turning, when he stepped inside, the stairs really snapped up and taxi began.
As that airplane rotated on MKC 3-6, about 1000 cars hit that airport, trying to catch Elvis before he left.
This was about 1973...

Dave's fibbin!!!! This wasn't 1973... it was last month! ELVIS LIVES!!!!

Had a flight of two F-117's cross our 12 o'clock from left to right at about 3-5 miles yesterday. Center called out traffic by saying "here's something you don't see everyday.....traffic 10 o'clock heading east, F-117" I called them in sight and stated it was a flight of two. :) Center came back and said he'd take my word for it since he couldn't tell....was just a sparrow on his radar screen. :D

Thought it might have been MikeD passing by!!!

That's crazy, I wonder how they fly IFR then? I suppose they squawk their GPS position and altitude or something?
