Touring a tower on Friday

Someone has set me up with a visit to TEB tower on Friday. This will be my first time visiting an ATC facility.

What are some good questions to ask while I tour the facility? What should I keep an eye out for? I want to make the most of the trip! Any advice would be great :-)

Is a business skirt-suit appropriate? I have a really cute one that I normally use for interviews.

Thanks!

EDIT - hopefully this guy can set me up with a trip to NY center also, so good questions for there would be appreciated also!

Dress "nice" but not to kill....If they are cool and not too busy they should let you "plug in" and listen to some of the communications. Try and talk to the manager if you can, or someone imporant...Make sure they know your name and that you are interested in the job. Good luck--have fun

Oh that's awesome... keep us updated on how it goes. That's only a few minutes away from me, so I'd like to know what it's like :)

ask one of the guys working radar to show you how to vector

Can TEB actually issue their own radar vectors, or just suggested headings? I'm not familiar with TEB, and I'm sure they have a radar display (DBRITE, ARTS, or such), but I would think they'd have to coordinate with N90 to have approach provide vectors.

I'd ask what makes TEB unique from other airports. Certain airports see massive amounts of traffic during different times of the year (Daytona during the NASCAR races, Oshkosh during the Fly-In, etc) while some airports have peculiar geographic issues.

That's what I'd be interested in.

aside from being always busy? :yup:

NEAT. Who did you call to schedule the tour with, perchance?

A pilot at my dad's work has a ton of FAA connections (corporate pilots thrive on networking); he set it up for me. I don't know if I'm touring it with him, meeting someone there, or just showing up and knocking on the door. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I'm hoping he can get me into NY center too at some point, because I'm interested in working at a center.

I went on a tour about two weeks ago, as one of my friends is a CTI graduate now in training. Just be respectfull, its was a little overwhelming for me like a kid at Disney World with extreme OCD... its hard to look at everything. Especially when I got into the tower because you could see much further than I was expecting, and a minor leauge baseball team was finishing a game with fireworks. The controllers weren't nearly as excited about them as I was. I was especially floored to see how small their trecon area was with only three seats. HAHAHAHAHA and the guy working the trecon had it on sweep mode. I was stupefied to see that was even an option, but he showed me the different settings. Like I mentioned, be nice, be respectfull and you will have a blast.

Peeps, most facilities will let you tour if you call and give them plenty of notice. Throw in the fact that you are a potential employee for the FAA. If you are able to, tour!! It is a blast!

ATL, sorry to hear the news. Your family will be in my thoughts...

Honu, don't know if this has been mentioned, but have fun!! Enjoy the tour, enjoy the facility.
