The winner was Cathay Pacific, the Hong Kong-based carrier most Americans only get to fly if they're making the long haul to Asia.

As is typical with surveys of this sort, few U.S. carriers scored very highly. It's tempting to say that's a function of their financial problems -- except for the fact that business conditions are challenging for airlines all over the world.

Or, you could argue that some of the best performers are national airlines that receive generous financial assistance from their governments. Credible -- until you remember those billion-dollar bailouts Washington handed out after September 11.

In fact, the problem for U.S. airlines is partly logistical. Americans hop around the country on a series of short flights. Delta can only offer so much service on a 30-minute shuttle flight, for example.

Story HERE.

Anyone surprised?

It is bias - AA do a smashing job internationally (as does United) anything domestic (which most Americans fly all the time) is greyhound quality thanks to Southwest, et al!

I've flown AA internationally a few times, and it's been nothing but a great experience. The staff usually has a smile on board and they provide a great experience all around.

I do believe that American Airlines and United offer good service...but honestly they are not up to par with the top European airlines and Qantas & Cathay. Even some South American airlines offer better on board service.

Having flown on European and Brazilian airlines many times I have observed that for quite some time now. I agree that U.S. airlines loose points because of many short domesic flights...but we have to remember the thousands of flights European airlines make to other European countries which are practically domestic in their own right. Plus VARIG's and TAM's extensive domestic network in Brazil.

Yet both VARIG, TAM, and the European airlines offer top quality service...despite financial problems, short routes within their region, etc.....

Of course I am talking about on board service only and not about the airlines as a whole. Because as far as pilots, maintenence, effiecency, etc many American airlines would be right up there in the top of the list. However, its sad but true: the flight attendents and service aboard U.S. carriers leaves much to be desired.

I completely agree with the above list. Airlines overseas, particularly the top five mentioned above, will ALWAYS be leaps and bounds over the level of service provided by any US carrier. Which is sad.

We look at the bottom line, and don't go for quality. Then we complain about it. You get what you pay for.

I have flown BA, QF, AA, and UA and internationally in the past few years they are all pretty much the same.

And what liberal bias may that be?

I tell you what -- I just love it when someone hears something he doesn't like and screams "liberal bias."

Look, you're paying the same price to fly coast to coast as you would to take Greyhound.

Expect the same level of service.

Want better service? Pay for it! First class is always available.

This isn't liberal bias, this is Anti-American bias, EVEN WORSE!

We're not a culture strong in customer service! Nothing bad about that statement, but Wal Mart is a lot busier this afternoon than Neimann-Marcus.

Some countries do things better. We've got about five Mexican restaraunts within five miles of my home, but we might only have one Norweigian restaraunt in the entire southwest!

Lutefisk, anyone?

Yeah, man, I must be one of those "terrarists" that "hates freedom" just because I have this crazy concept that if you want exceptional service, you have to pay for it.

Americans want to pay Wal-Mart like prices and get Tiffany level service. Well, son, things don't work that way. You want to pay low, low prices for your airfare? Then don't expect Singapore level service, because guess what Singapore doesn't do. That's right, discount their product down to Air Greyhound levels.

Instead of saying that the survey is biased against US based carriers, why don't you think it through and figure out WHY no US based carrier made the list?

An old friend - retired TWA captain - said to me about thirty years ago that "...no people on earth expect superior service more than Americans, yet no people on earth are less willing to pay for it or to give it."

I sort of agreed with him then, but I more than agree with him now.

As a proud American, that kind of stings, but you know it's spot-on accurate.

We want Ruth's Chris at Sizzler prices.

Having flown on most of the list and all of the U.S. carriers on International segments, I'd say that I'd have to admit that the list is spot on. Might not like it, but this is not about what I would wish were true, just what is true.

I agree. You won't believe all the mess my mom has to go through w/ customers at AA. She gets yelled at and so forth about ppl wanting top of the line service for cheap prices. People these days have just lost their minds. I guess these years will be known as the $uper$aver 2000's. I bet these ppl walk in WalMarts every Friday night waiting for them to put out a Tiffany's diamond ring in the display case in the fake jewelry dpt.

I know this off subject but it kills me. It's funny how you get a customer complaining that their flight is delayed b/c of weather. Yep, it may be beautiful and sunny and Chicago, but that doesn't mean that Dallas, your destination, is experiencing beautiful weather this tornado season.

I really hate it when an anti-American or liberal bias is used to rate airlines.

I really hate it when idiots like yourself equate "liberal" with "anti-American".
