On this day, April 12

1961Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human to travel into outer space, in Vostok 3KA-2 (Vostok 1).
1981 – The first launch of a Space Shuttle: Columbia launches on the STS-1 mission.

Quite the day, as we now think about the shuttle program winding down and with the Russians the only real capable nation to carry astronauts on a regular basis soon.
