Three hots and a cot (or a free ride...;) )

Polar742

All the responsibility none of the authority
I've had a lot of folks send me PMs asking how to get a ride, so I thought I'd throw out a general rundown.

Here's the link: http://www.polaraircargo.com/contactus-confirm.html. It works for either Polar or Atlas, as either website (polar or atlas) sends the request to the same person.

All the rules and regulations are on that page, and will link you to departures/destinations.

A few tidbits:

1) It's a whale. I'm not sure about surfboards, skis or what not, but we have room. Some of our guys bring the modern day equivelant of a steamer trunk on their trips.

2) Inspite of #1, the upper deck is cramped. Keep a small bag of crap you'll want for the flight (laptop, music, whatev). There are some 110V outlets available. I haul my little PNS duffel and a backpack up there.

3) If there are 4 pilots, you won't get a bunk. 3 or 2, you might. Just depends on the number of company jumpseaters. You will have food on board. It's not cuisine, but it'll keep you alive.

4) Depending on the number of crew, there are up to 6 jumpseats, and a minimum of 4. Just because you see a full bird, don't be discouraged. Check on the day of departure due to reroutes and phantom JS(we try to call in if this is the case) caused by work rules.

5) Just like all the others, say hi and introduce yourself to the CA and crew. Once on board, drop the majority of your crap right inside the L1 door, and if you can make it upstairs cool. If the upper deck is pretty busy and everyone bumping into each other (every single time there are 4 pilots and 1 jump, this happens), feel free to hang on the main deck until the ops guy comes down from upstairs.

6) Take a nap. Have some food. Watch your movie. Enjoy the ride.

7) IF YOU ARE NOT TAKING THE FLIGHT, NO MATTER HOW CLOSE TO DEPARTURE CALL THE OPS NUMBER YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN.

If I can answer any questions, I'd be happy to do so.

Have fun out there....:)

We only have 2 bunks.....

I guess if the flight is long enough, it'd be 4 hots and maybe a cot....

Thanks for the info :)

I remember Polar used to take F/A jumpseaters, not sure if they do anymore but several people I worked with at Eagle would use you guys to go places. They were always very appreciative of the ride. :)

I'm thinking of taking you guys to ICN his summer. Thanks for the info!

ICN? i plan on going there this summer as well. Polar used to have a direct LAX-ICN run. But i think they fly via ANC now. You can also try united out of SFO ot ICN. Both times i have jumpseated from ICN to SFO, they have put me in biz class. good luck

Huh, you said that you have a little PNS:D..........Ok, recess is over. Good info! Thanks!

5Y (Atlas) fliegen aus JFK nach Hahn.

Fun seeing Hahn there. I was actually born at Hahn, AFB in the glorious fall of 1969. My Dad was in the service and loaded bombs onto F-4's for a tactical squadron that was based at Hahn. My Mom taught third grade on the base and they lived off base in a little town called Mastershausen in an apartment located above a Gasthaus. So, what I am saying is that my first home was a 400 Sq. Ft. apartment over a bar in West Germany. That should explain a lot for you folks.

Thanks for posting Polar. Unfortunately for me, I no longer possess CASS access or my ID card as soon as I got furloughed. Anyway, I know what it's like to ride upstairs on a 747 freighter and it's far superior to getting stuck in coach on a pax airline and highly recommended. Arguably better than business class too.

Thanks for the info Polar. Do you have a route map for both carriers? I can't seem to find one on the Atlas site..

I might give UAL a try. I know the summer months are crazy as far as loads to ICN. Figured I would try Polar. I know Delta does ATL-ICN. Don't know if they still have that one. I know a ZED fare on KAL is only like 80 bucks one way. That might be an option.

I don't. We have different frequencies and what not. I'd just put in the city parings and see what comes up. You may get a routing that will surprise you.

As of now, I think we still do LAX-ICN. 4 jumpseats on that one. There are still RSV lines in ICN, so prolly some dh too.

you should post some photos of the upper deck so folks know what to expect. (and so I can quietly weep about how your lavatory is bigger than my entire airplane)

I think the upper deck is smaller than your airplane. The seats on the left side don't recline, nor does the footrest come up all the way.

You'd be amazed how small the space is, and yet how crappily they laid the stuff out to make it feel even more so.
