Polar742
All the responsibility none of the authority
I've had a lot of folks send me PMs asking how to get a ride, so I thought I'd throw out a general rundown.
Here's the link: http://www.polaraircargo.com/contactus-confirm.html. It works for either Polar or Atlas, as either website (polar or atlas) sends the request to the same person.
All the rules and regulations are on that page, and will link you to departures/destinations.
A few tidbits:
1) It's a whale. I'm not sure about surfboards, skis or what not, but we have room. Some of our guys bring the modern day equivelant of a steamer trunk on their trips.
2) Inspite of #1, the upper deck is cramped. Keep a small bag of crap you'll want for the flight (laptop, music, whatev). There are some 110V outlets available. I haul my little PNS duffel and a backpack up there.
3) If there are 4 pilots, you won't get a bunk. 3 or 2, you might. Just depends on the number of company jumpseaters. You will have food on board. It's not cuisine, but it'll keep you alive.
4) Depending on the number of crew, there are up to 6 jumpseats, and a minimum of 4. Just because you see a full bird, don't be discouraged. Check on the day of departure due to reroutes and phantom JS(we try to call in if this is the case) caused by work rules.
5) Just like all the others, say hi and introduce yourself to the CA and crew. Once on board, drop the majority of your crap right inside the L1 door, and if you can make it upstairs cool. If the upper deck is pretty busy and everyone bumping into each other (every single time there are 4 pilots and 1 jump, this happens), feel free to hang on the main deck until the ops guy comes down from upstairs.
6) Take a nap. Have some food. Watch your movie. Enjoy the ride.
7) IF YOU ARE NOT TAKING THE FLIGHT, NO MATTER HOW CLOSE TO DEPARTURE CALL THE OPS NUMBER YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN.
If I can answer any questions, I'd be happy to do so.
Have fun out there....
