There is a ferry pilot listing on Barnstormers for $35 a day! AND he provides his own insurance!!! WTF? His resume includes a degree from Everybody Runs Away Unemployed!

Jesus, how can anyone compete with that? A degree that wasn't cheap, provides his own insurance. What's next, the pilot pays the airplane owner for the flight just like GIA?

This ferry pilot has no business in aviation. Consider that last week, I paid a guy $35 to spend an hour washing and cleaning my car. This guy doesn't have nearly as much education as our ferry pilot, and he considers his skill to be 4.375 times more valuable than that of an ERAU grad. FML
 
Really not liking the way things are headed... It seems like the dream of finally being able to break out of crappy low end jobs is moving further and further away.
 
Send him over, I'll hire him to ferry my plane across the airport to the MX shop. Then he can fly his ass commercial back home.

I wouldn't trust him to touch any plane of mine. You never know what kind of stupid pilot tricks a person like this will pull.

Anybody who hires him is asking for trouble.

Not saying I hate anybody who hires him. But they'll get what they pay for, that's for sure.
 
He might get a few bones his way - but I doubt he'll be flying as much as he'd liked to. The first time he ferries something on a ferry permit that hasn't flown in a year and experiences three or four real-life emergencies in one trip, pumping fuel in sub zero temps, cursing the airplane because the heater doesn't work..... he'll probably re-think the $35 a day.

Like everything else in aviation, networking is key, in spite of a dozen other ads on barnstromers for ferry pilots making pennies on the dollar - I've been doing pretty good as well as a few other guys I know doing ferry stuff... and we don't advertise at all.

450 hours of experience may not work out either for that guy, but at least he's quite the entrepreneur.
 
I understand that this guy does NOT have respect for himself. I get it. But he should at least have the decency to respect others and quit trying to pull stuff like that.

Flying is a trade, not a hobby. If you're looking for a hobby then go take up golf or something...

Flying for pay/for a living is a trade.

Boring holes in the sky in a 172 on the weekends is a hobby.
 
how many of you really think this is going to change and flying is going to become (again) a respectable profession? As much as I'd like it to be, I wouldn't really bet my money on it. Sorry, had to say it.

I highly doubt it will ever change...it's the downside of capitalism. Side note...is it possible that the ad is just a typo and he really meant $35/hr?
 
ALPA requires it members have degrees with with certain criteria. Professional education and testing above and beyond the FAA. Continuing education. Licensing its members. Disciplining its members that break a code of conduct. Creating a "profession" instead of proclaiming a profession. Just like lawyers, drs, dentist, cpas, pharmacists, architects and veterinarians.

If ALPA were to take this initiatives you would see the type of payrates in europe.

He doesn't owe anyone anything. I don't care if he works for $35/day. It's a free world. He can shoot himself in the foot as much as he wants.

Don't get upset because people like this supposedly take your jobs away. If you try to compete on price alone, you'll lose every time. Offer a better quality product and clients will notice.

I don't see people like this as competition. He's on a completely different playing field. My clients aren't interested in using a person like him, and I'm not interested in trying to attract the type of client who would also be attracted to him.

You're talking about Ruth's Chris Steak House getting upset because McDonald's doesn't charge enough for dinner. You can't even compare the two.

I pity the fool who hires this guy because he probably doesn't know what he's doing. It's going to be a screwed up situation all the way around and nobody will end up happy.

But again, it's not my problem. I'll be equally successful regardless of what this guy does.

I was unaware of this. Are you saying that to join ALPA, you need to do more than just your checkride?

I hope to God you are right. 35/hr or 350/day seems a wee bit more reasonable. At the same time, we all know that there are people out there that would consider 35/day.

What pisses me off, is that this guy will probably do this for 35/day then go to the first crappy regional that hires him, then promptly start complaining about pay, QOL, lack of respect etc.
