So I'm going through the FAA tutorial/explanation of icing, which ended up being very informative, and I'm wondering how/why clear ice forms into that backwards horseshoe shape?
Im not certain, but i think the horning has to do with the "bow wave" for lack of a better term, along the leading edge of the wing. The airflow carries the water droplets in such a way that the upper and lower surfaces of the leading edge build up ice faster than the center.
If i had time i would draw up an example and show you...im sure someone else can shed light on the subject.
