Such an awesome airplane - although a buddy of mine from college who was a former AF mechanic, said they're complete junk on the inside - particularly the electronic systems.

How do you compute the maximum operating altitude of the B-1?

Height of the jackstand + airfield elevation.

I'd imagine the variable geometry wings are a maintenance nightmare as well. I still love the Bone though, probably my favorite AF aircraft.

I've heard that same joke regarding FREDs. And since the F-22's are grounded right now, I guess you could say the same thing there, too.

The AF doesn't always buy us the most reliable airplanes, does it?

With the exception of the C-135 series, the KC-10, the C-130 series and the B-52, no they don't.

A buddy of mine (who is also a JC member) toured the tower in RAP which is right next door to Ellsworth AFB. The controllers said those B-1's come in daily with emergencies. Made me chuckle after reading this thread.

Is that in Rapid City Ryan? I saw them a few years ago on a X-country out to Rushmore and Devil's Tower. Impressive planes!

What!?

Edit: Just read up on it a little. I guess O2 isn't working right, and they think thats what got the guy in Alaska?
