The future of pilot jobs

Again, it looks like all of the younger professional pilots are freakin' out around here while the old skool guys are wearing the "been there done that" tshirts.

Have some of you guys actually sat back and took in some of the perspective that Zap has posted on here. The guy was furloughed like 19 times.:sarcasm: He's still surviving. He rolled with the waves until he found a happy place.

I'm coming closer and closer to the conclusion that I can expect to be furloughed as many times as he has or more. I'm a mentally preparing myself for that. I have taken his advice on trying to save for that rainy day, week, month, or year. I am open minded enough to figure that I may have to go back to instructing or flying a single engine piston for a living if the crap hits the fan. I know that I like what I'm doing enough to survive off of doing it.

I am kind of shocked that some of you guys are so suprised that things are going in the industry. Maybe we don't have enough old timers around preaching of the past. I know that the few that are here have would say "been there done that got the tshirt " "Except when I had to do it...it was winter....it was cold and windy....and I had to walk ten miles....barefoot in the snow!":)

Well said Kelvin. Im on the inside looking in, and its not that bad. PGT don't let anyone tell you your wrong just b/c you arent in the industry. Jtrain do you guys really have Reduced Rest that often? For the past couple years XJET guys have been group making the most positive statements about the regional lifestyle. So positive that someone nicknamed them the "XJET cheerleading squad" My how times have changed. On almost every major aviation forum XJETTERs are now the biggest whiners. Very ironic....

eh if I listen to people at JC I'd be hating life while studying accounting and waiting for a 60k/year job that would give me white hair within 10 years.

Not I.

It's been ups and downs, but more ups than downs and I'm having a great time.

There are not many scheduled reduced rest overnights, but they happen. If you have to do them to keep the schedule, you'll do them.

It's the same at almost any other company.

and.....................you don't think that instructing first timers or flying single pilot IFR in actual or dealing with scheduling, MX, Pax, etc. all for a third of that will give you white hair within that same time frame. You will work three times the hours initially to earn that third as well.;)

Each individual is their own person and each individual will take given information and make their own decisions. Some educated, some not! No one is perfect, but it sure helps to shorten the learning curve by learning from others.

Dude. I am not trying to be a prick but..... What are you 21 maybe 22? I bet you have very little responsibility. No wife, kids, mortgage. I bet you drive a piece of crap and live in a studio apartment. If that is enough to make you happy then great. Most people including yourself in 10 years want more. Much more. I look at all the money I spent to get here as an investment. I expect to make a good return on my investment. It's pretty hard to rally the troops and demand higher pay, better work rules ect ect when there are so many Koo-laide drinking kids like you out there. I'll bet you would work for free if they asked you. Most people are not in the situation you are. Wait a few years. Reality will set in and most of your friends will be making more than you and be home more often. That studio apartment and 87 Corsica won't seem so great then.

Aight guys. . .

Marcus is a great guy. No doubt about that.

Let's keep the comments professional, otherwise it's ABSOLUTELY pointless.

Now, unless we wanna talk about people undercutting us by going to RJ courses, Bridge courses or whatever. . .then fine, get pissed off. But otherwise, I would hope all of us deserve some sample of professionalism.

Just calling it as I see it. How far off am I? How much of what I said isn't true?

I think I have a good idea of what to expect, as do many other 'outsiders' that frequent this board but it has become like a broken record.
training questions get responses such as "STAY AWAY if you enjoy life" "uhh thanks for the help?"

it might seem like people aren't listening but I guarantee you a lot of them are

You don't, actually.

I thought I did, I was wrong.
I've know A LOT of people (not just talking jtrain) who are and were on this board for at least the past 2 years say they were "listening" who are now seeing and experiencing what others were talking about and are now getting all verklempt about it. to be honest, they knew what they were doing based on their choices and knowledge from the board and i tend to wonder....did they just "forget" what they were told in the last downturn or were they really *not* listening?

and...with that, will the new generation (like PGTs generation of up and coming pilots) learn from this one? i have my doubts simply based on history of those going thru the motions now that were "learning" (or apparently not) from others going thru the motions in the past.

 :p

I'm not really debating anything you said. . .just that it didn't come off as too professional. That's all.

We are supposed to be professionals right? Then again, I'm a little bit of a Hat nazi, and I like shined shoes.

Don't fly in the states is the thing. Fly in alaska, or in Africa or something, then you can be down low and slow and having fun. Work for a small enough company and you don't have to worry about working on holidays, and you have decent job security. I make $40/hr at 1140TT working at a mom and pop alaska air taxi and I have way more fun than I had in 600hrs in the right seat of a 1900. I get paid better, work less, and have a place to stay when I'm in Kodiak, my girlfriend loves it because I can pay the bills, and because we can get free jumpseat on the local airline. Career development? Well, I'll be in the King Air when the company buys it, I'll be on floats next summer, and I'll fly the Aztec a little in the winter. Is it a CRJ? No. Will I have fun and make more money, and also learn valuable tools for keeping myself alive? You betcha. Go local, have fun, its the way to go.

Just curious... I know you said you work less.. but how much less?

How many hours a month do ya fly?

I haven't reviewed the thread, but it's largely 49% "message" and 51% "delivery" on the internet man.

I made my statement based on this thread as well as others. There are people in this profession that would be happy no matter how bad things get. People like that are no help in changing things for the better. I have no doubt as 777 gets older or his airline tanks he may change his tune. I see nothing wrong with calling someone out for who they are. Some people happen to be Kool-aid drinkers. It doesn't mean if I bumped into him at the bar on an overnight that I wouldn't buy him a drink.
