Small Plane Crashes Into Home in Mar Vista Area
Times Headlines
From Associated Press
A small plane approaching a local airport in heavy overcast crashed into a home in the Mar Vista area Tuesday and ignited a large fire, authorities said.
The only person at home when the plane hit escaped unharmed, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. The status of whoever was on the plane "looks very grim right now," he said.
The plane went down on Mountain View Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. and 60 firefighters responded, Humphrey said. The blaze was extinguished in about 20 minutes.
The plane was a propeller-driven, single-engine Mooney that was on approach to nearby Santa Monica Airport when contact was lost, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Donn Walker.
Airport manager Bob Trimborn had no immediate comment.
A dense cloud covering as low as 200 feet blanketed the area, said Joe Sirard, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Pilots flying in such conditions are required to be trained to fly with a plane's instruments only, he said.
The crash site was near the east end of the airport. The plane was traveling east to west and clipped a few garages and power lines before plummeting vertically into the home, Humphrey said.
A man, woman and child lived in the home. The woman and child were not home. The man was in the front room on the first floor and escaped without injuries.
"They're profoundly fortunate," Humphrey said.
