The \"C\" word: College

Posted this in the Lav so everyone can bash..everyone add their opinion!

I'm a junior in high school, and starting to look at colleges.
My goal: Major Airline Pilot.
Keep in mind:
-I'll have my PPL, and maybe some instrument when I enter college.
-I'm a C average kind of kid, not a straight A plus student, and I do a sport, and involved in some clubs.

I started checking out websites to various places, but not sure what I should major in (Something else then aviation..? Stick with aviation?). All I know is that I probably don't want to major in criminal justice, because If I do I'll know I'll become a police officer like my grandfather, father, brother..I want to be my own self (Sounds cheesey, eh?).

I'm from then Boston area, wouldn't mind traveling but would like to stay nearby but live on campus.

Riddle: Too much $$ for my parents to handle (I have a twin sister, thats two college tuitons there helping out with!)
Florida Tech: Seems shady
ATP: Is this place even a college? If not, it seems great to get some multi and I have heard nothing but good things about it
Bridgewater State (Mass)-Associated with Delta connection, I was told to stay away!

Any input in greaatly appreciated, but I don't feel like getting stressed over making the right choice. Where should I go! What should I major in!

Ahhh!

Re: The \"C\" word: College

ATP... not a college. And you might get better feedback with this post in the general section

Re: The \"C\" word: College

If you're in Mass why not check out Daniel Webster. I know they have an aviation program but i'm not sure what kind of flight training they offer.

'cept they're in Nashua, NH. Duno where in Mass he is, but that's like a 3-5 hour drive, and I thought he wanted close.

Out of curiousity, if you don't know where he is Mass, how do you know it's a 3-5 hour drive to Nashua?

Nashua is just over the Mass border .... literally the first town you hit when you cross the state line. The furthest southwest corner of Massachusetts might be a three hour drive to Nashua but outside of that, Nashua is within an hour and a half of virtually all of Mass. Anyway, DWC is a decent enough school and definitely has the strongest combination flight/college program in New England. Might as well check it out.

Re: The \"C\" word: College

Nashua 3 hours? No way.

I live in Southern Massachusetts, about a 45 minute drive from Boston. I live about 20 minutes from Rhode Island and about an hour from Nashua..

NH = close to home
RI = close to home

Basically anywhere in New England, but Daniel Webster sounds great..I actually never knew they had a flight program. Has anyone went through with them?ny expierences?

Re: The \"C\" word: College

Stay away from Florida Tech.. if it seems shady, by personal experience (not with Florida Tech but with Florida schools), it probably is!

what other schools are up there, where you could use in-state tuition? definately try to get a degree outside of aviation (IMO).

Re: The \"C\" word: College

Hi Joey -

I live about 40 minutes from Nashua, NH and Daniel Webster College. I went there this summer for an Aviation Career Education program that lasted one week. We flew their planes, had class and lived in the dorms. We also did other field trips, activities. I really enjoyed it and I think DWC is a great college. By far one of the best in my opinion. DWC is one of my choices for when I need to choose a college. I am a Junior right now, how about you? Either way, I think you should look into it. Maybe someone from DWC will reply to this.

Re: The \"C\" word: College

I know that DW has a great program as far as academics. I have heard way to many people complain about the flight program though...way overpriced ie 1.4 in the mooney almost $500

Take a look for yourself though. I didnt attend DW but fly out of Boire every week so I have run into enough students to believe what they say.

Re: The \"C\" word: College

well I talked to my Senior high school counselor today, she said I could easily make it to Cal state fullerton and Cal poly Pomona, also ERAU and UND. I have a 3.0 1010 SAT and a persoanll resume of my clubs and sports I have played. However I may not continue my flight training, since UND will not count or credit my PPL.

Re: The \"C\" word: College

UND.

There's actually a guy here at UND from Boston, I believe, that went to Daniel Webster and ended up transferring here because it was getting ridiculously expensive at DW. That's what he said, but I don't know more than that.

Come on over!

Re: The \"C\" word: College

I'm in a similar situation, excecpt I'm out in Western Massachusetts sorta near Springfield. I get mostly B's and then a few A's.

Currently I'm looking into Westfield State and Bridgewater State if I choose to fly. I know about Westfield's program as the flight school I went to helped start it up. Although it's a business degree in managment, you get credit for flight courses. As for BSC, I have no clue about them and really want to see it and find out if it's any good. BSC is my only chance of living out of my house next year and leave western Mass, so I really want to check it out. UMASS isn't too far from the airport in Northampton so I might just do a computer science degree and then train out of there on the side.

Re: The \"C\" word: College

I have heard good things about the program at Daniel Webster. Also Nashua is not a bad place to be for 4 years.

Do you mean Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne? That is actually a very good school. I didn't go there but, I knew people that did and they all had very good things to say about it. I'd probably go there over Riddle.

Re: The \"C\" word: College

Robs, I worked at the airport in Northampton for about 4 days before getting recalled back down to Florida. It's a great place. The guys there are really friendly and the air craft they fly are in good shape. There are big changes coming there as well. The airport is under new ownership and they have some great plans.

[/ QUOTE ]FIT is a different school from Florida Tech... if he does mean FIT, then by all means - put that one into consideration!

It will credit the ground school if you got your PPC at a part 141 school. But you still have to do 14 flying lessons (instead of 30) to get used to things around here if you come in with your PPC.

And trust me, 90% of the kids arriving with their PPC, they will need the extra 20 hours getting used to the way things are done around here.

I used to be against this course (called 112), until I started instructing here and have seen other pilots that have learned at other airports. Most are great sticks, but they lack procedure and radio skills in a busy environment.
