That's it, I'm dropping my AOPA membership.

I'm tired of contributing to the killing of trees... mailers that are sent out twice a week asking for more money is not what I signed up for 6 years ago. Now it is getting even worse. I am sick and tired of receiving junk mail from the AOPA. I am not paying $39 a year to an organization that drives me crazy with having to sort out all the crap they send me only to immediately throw it away. Goodbye AOPA!

Let me say up front that I'm a mod on their forum so I'm probably bias. Although I can't be all that bias because mods are unpaid volunteers. Other than than the occasional AOPA chatchka and tickets to their expo, I'm really just a member like everyone else.

That being said, I agree that they can sometimes send out too much junk. But I also really do believe that they are the best advocate general aviation has and they really do need every member they can get. I'm not sure it will do any good, but I would urge you to give a call to member services before you give up and cancel. Tell them that you don't want all the junk mail. I'm not sure whether or not they can take you off the lists, but if they know you're going to cancel because of it, they'll make it happen if its at all within the power of the member services folks. And if it isn't within their power, they'll definitely take notice. And if enough people speak up the same way you do, it will change.

I let my membership lapse when the best they could do when I asked about user fees was "We're spreading word for members to write to their congressperson"

Yeah...I've met with my congressmen. What are you doing?

Well, we're spreading the word to have members write to their congressmen...

My money didn't need to go in Boyer's Cj.

AOPAs old flight planner was nice. Easy to use. The new flt planner is not. And when I noted some differences, I was told it came about because the old one was not 'robust'.

What is your opinion? (I used it for my Swift and now have no real reason to remain a member)

It's kind of weird to me, because I've been a member for years, and I get almost nothing from them in the mail. I don't recall if I opted out or something, but I get a magazine on occasion and that's it. I recall that in years past I used to get lots of stuff, but not anymore. Maybe all the junk is still going to my old address (I moved 1.5 years ago), but the important info is getting here to the new house, so who knows?

Most of the stuff they send me generally goes in the shredder at my house, makes great packing material for sending Xmas gifts:D

Do you have good credit? Because I receive WAY more credit card offers in the mail than what AOPA sends me.

I too get about a mailing a week. I understand if they want to send me something every year to see if I'm interested in joining (not bloody likely) but every week is a bit much.

My opinion? I have yet to find any online flight planning solution that works as well as the commercial stand alone software I used to use when I needed flight planning software regularly. All the online solutions are too slow on the screen redraws to be of much use if you need to use them all the time. Since I don't have much need for flight planning software these days, the AOPA stuff works just fine for the 2 times a year I need to use it.

Just have your list of reasons why you didn't renew ready.

They'll call in about 9 months after you don't respond to any of the mailers they continue to send you even after canceling.

Had the same upset a few years back - one phonecall was all it took.
Members should have the option to opt out of their marketing efforts.
What I hated the most was the "Final NOTICE" on the envelope. If it just was so! They sent me at lest 12 FINAL NOTICES! WTH?
The paper and marketing costs are unjust, if I need AD insurance I will let them know... ;)

You say this every time and every time I ask you, what do you expect them to do?

That's great that you've met your congressman, what else have you done?

You can contact AOPA and be removed from mailers. The effort you put into bitching on the internet could have been spent contacting them.

I canned my AOPA membership a few years back. With ALPA representing my personal and professional interests with an easily processed check deduction, it seemed redundant.

It's infuriating that AOPA still sends me their garbage.

I think Phil Boyer needs to step down.
