Teterboro tips?

Hey all,

I am currently on a X-C from KALW to KTEB. I'm in Iowa now for the night and am headed to TEB tomorrow. I have never been farther East than DEN and I was wondering if you guys had any tips or tricks for the TEB area. I have heard it is a busy airport, but is there anything else I should watch out for? Thanks in advance!

Its really not that bad getting in. Although depending on what time you leave it can be a huge pain. Only suggestion I can make is be familiar with the location of whichever FBO you chose to go. I think there are 5 on the field.

If you file IFR, do not file GPS direct.

Edit: That's only to get out of there IFR, I'm not sure about getting in under IFR.

It can be busy, but the times I've been in there it wasn't THAT bad.

Two things: watch out for the towers near the end of the north side of the airport, they're kinda close.

When you depart, watch the altitude restrictions, the airspace is very congested.

Are you flying a pistion? Why TEB?? go to CDW or MMU. I was just there today for a job interview and it's rare to see anything but a Jet in KTEB. Be extra alert for traffic and wake turbulence.

You have TEB traffic as well as EWR traffic only 3,000 feet above you. Think wake. Stay safe.

Even Sully preferred landing in the Hudson rather than dealing with TEB; that should tell you something right there.

Thanks for all the replies so far! We are flying a Turbo Seminole and we chose TEB because we thought it would be a good challenge and keep us on our toes. What is wrong with GPS direct on departure?

I second the above on MMU or some other airport. TEB is a "special" place. You asking why not to file direct is proof that you are not fully aware of what you are getting into. This is not a knock on you, just you should probably get some experience in the area before trying TEB, IMO.

By the way, the reason for no direct filings is it's NY and NJ airspace. IFR, you have preferred routes, and you need to file them. They will not hold your hand there. They will get upset with you if you file direct IFR and tell you to figure out the correct route.

You will be in some of the busiest airspace in the world around NY and NJ, so you will be on your toes anyway.:pirate:

or 1,000ft above you.

This.

If neither of you have been in there I would suggest you goto MMU. In all honesty TEB is more of a pain leaving with traffic but coming in there can be difficult. I've been in there probably well over 500 times and each time they throw something new at you. As of last week the ILS to 19 was OTS which means they are using the VOR to 24 circle approach a lot more. A lot more going on, a lot of traffic point outs and NY approach controllers aren't known for their patience. A turbo seminole might feel like a "big" plane but it isn't. It's not fast either so you won't be able to mix in with the mostly jet traffic going into TEB. There are probably more turbowackers going into EWR than TEB.

What FBO are you planning on using?

Yeah, TEB is not really an airport I'd recommend someone fly to just for the fun of it. Yes it is good experience, but there are other ways to get that. If you have to go there that's one thing, but it ain't fun. TEB is one of my least favorite airports to deal with.

As for a GPS direct filing, quite simply you're not going to get it. You'll get lots of rerouting. Hell, you'll get rerouting even if you file the preferred routes. Like mike said above, NY controllers aren't the most patient. They're good, but you better know what you're doing and have good radio skills or life will get obnoxious real quick.

Going to Teterhole VOLUNTARILY? You are SICK, man, sick.

1) Don't go
2) Don't go
3) Watch out for the bedbugs. They're not the sneaky bite ya at night kind, they'll just jump in front of you, pull you out of your rental car, and mug you right there in broad daylight.

Hmmmmm Don't go..... TEB isn't bad getting in but is hell getting out of, best of luck to you man! Its definitely an adventure

In the same spirit, you might as well fly into LGA/JFK/EWR as well. :D All of them are still public airports. :D

In regard with
What is wrong with GPS direct on departure?
, I totally agree with Boris and other replies. Please open your A/FD and study prefer routes in and out of TEB.

I'd have to say this is probably the best advice to heed OP.

While you may be looking for an adventure, you really should consider another place. The NE corridor has certain push times where it gets really busy. For example, PHL gets REAL busy between 11-12 and 2-3. If you're not part of the regularly scheduled program, it's hard to get in a word because frankly, they just don't have time. Coming into that flow not knowing what to expect can really throw a monkey wrench into things.

As for routing, check out preferred routing in the back of the AFD and from sources like flightaware. Should give you a heads up.
