To be a test pilot do I need an aeronautical engineering degree? Do I need any special ratings? Can I test military aircraft or only civillian? Is the pay good?
I know a test pilot who is currently flying the V-22 up in Maryland. He doesn't have an aeronautical eng. degree but he does have a masters in mech. eng. From what I've gathered from talking to him, you have to go through the military test pilot school to be a test pilot fro the military. Hope this helps.
Yeah, I believe that you have to be military, but I'm not the best source of info for this subject. Perhaps MikeD or Lloyd (Mtsu) will have something to say?
To go to the USAFTPS or NavyTPS, you must be a member of the military, have a engineering, math or physics degree, and for test pilot, must be a military trained pilot. There is only one civilian test pilot school (at Mojave, CA) that I know of. I believe it cost around $500-750K to attend, I don't know what the prerequsites are. Check it out at http://www.ntps.com/ . I think you'll find that the vast majority of test pilots for major companies like Boeing or Gulfstream were once military test pilots who either got out or retired from the military
