Temp's Aloft @ 3000ft

I'm planning a XC for tomorrow morning from 7B2 to KASH and I plan on making the flight at 3500'MSL. I've noticed that the winds aloft projection at 3000 has no temperature associated with it. Do I just take the field temperature and subtract 3F for every 1000 feet?

I used to teach my students to interpolate for the next available altitude. Do you remember why that temp is missing?

Temperatures are always omitted at the 3,000' MSL level on the winds/temps aloft forecast product. Temperatures are also omitted if the altitude of a reporting site is within 2500' of a given forecast altitude.

No temps within 3000 FT AGL (not MSL). Just subtract 2 degrees C from surface temp per 1000 feet, see how it stacks up with the next first available temp.

Hey a local! Nice to see someone on the boards flying from 7b2.
I was wondering how long it would take to run into someone from home base on here. I passed my check ride with Royal about 2 weeks ago and am just working on building XC hours while working on my Instrument Rating.

Do you still fly out of Northampton?

I don't, but I got all my ratings there, and spent a couple years there as an instructor. Glad to see Royal is still giving rides! I got most of my certificates from him.

Really a great airport with lots of great people. I practically lived there when I was earning my ratings.

ForeFlight FTW.

Wrong.

The winds/temps aloft forecast text product is listed in feet MSL (except levels 18,000 and higher, which are pressure altitude), not AGL. Temperatures are always omitted at the 3,000' MSL level. Temperatures will also be omitted if the altitude of the reporting site is within 2,500' AGL of a given altitude (for example, if a reporting site sits at 5,000'MSL like DEN, then there will be no temperature information at the 6,000' MSL level on the text product).

The following quote is taken directly from the ADDS/aviationweather.gov website.

"All levels through 12,000 feet are true altitude (MSL). The levels 18,000 feet and above are pressure altitude. Wind direction is from true north. No winds are forecast within 1,500 feet of station elevation. Also, no temperatures are forecast for the 3,000 foot level or for any level within 2,500 feet of station elevation."
