Taxi to Gates

Quick question for yas,

when do pilots know which gate they will be parking at, when arriving at their destination? Do they get told during flight which gate to expect, or some other way? Also, Do pilots get given specific taxi directions as they evacuate the runway, or just get told to follow taxiway...blah, and when closer to the turn they get told the next turn to take,.....?

I hope that makes sense,

Aussie

As for gates some airlines have ACARS which basically sends a text message to the aircraft, and it shows up on ACARS in the plane. For those that dont have it, we call "In range" apprx 15-20 min out to our Ops Freq at that airport they will reply with "Roger, see ya at gate 21" or something like that.

Taxi instructions can vary depending on how busy the airport is, time of day, complexity of taxi etc etc....It can range from "Turn Right, Taxi to the gate with me" to " Delta, Papa, Kilo, Kilo Two, To the ramp" .

You call the company ARINC frequency when you are 'in range' and they advise your gate. Every airline has their own frequency(ies) for aircraft communications with ground stations. If you are ACARS equipped then you can get your arrival gate info as well as all your connecting pax gate info.

You get instructions to your destination (runway or gate) or to a point where you hold for traffic, then you get further instructions. Like "Charlie, Sierra, Bravo (taxiways) to 24R." or "Cross 25L, contact ground" then ground will tell you your taxiways to parking. Like "via X-ray, Sierra to parking".

At newark we ACARS the flight deck about an hour and a half before their scheduled arrival. We tell them the gate they are using, what door for disembarkment which varies from gate to gate and with the different new Upper Class Suite. Also in the ACARS we ask for an ETA and if they have any specials ie whellchairs.

We seem to mostly use the Company Freq. for when the outbound crew is at the gate and need something before pushback or to keep the crew informed about the delay.

ACARS stands for Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System

But remember when you call in range you are approx 10-15 min out and in ATL gate changes are a common thing. There are times when they wont know the new gate until they call to enter the ramp and find out they are on B concourse instead of A. Meanwhile you have told the paxs that they are coming to an A gate.
